Tax and service charge added to bill

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. What law requires a 5% service charge and where does that money go?
No law requires the service charge, but most international hotels in Temple Town charged it when I worked there. Cannot speak for other hotels, but at the hotel I worked, the entire service charge was given to the staff. Averaged USD 90 extra a month.
same amount to all the hotel staff ? or the amount depends on the job and level ?

Same amount though I know some hotels vary it according to position.

many restaurants in the malls and hotels in Phuket add on 10% service charge, (not as bad as Bali where they add 10% +7%)
never considered it a scam, BUT it pisses me off when i get lousy service.
not sure what checking the bill will do if u see the 10% added .
going to say u refuse to pay?

Never say anything added when shopping in grocery stores or such, although in thailand on large ticket items u can claim 7% back when u depart the country.
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

VAT is 10%
Service Charge min. 5% according to a directive from the Tourist Department. Must be distributed to staff, which a lot of owners simply ignore.
Room tax is 2% (of course, for hotels and guesthouses only.)

The same applies to establishments in the West, while it may be included in the published prices, except the VAT or sales in the U.S. So why complain?

I tried and failed. Apparently at the time of sale, the seller needs to give a special form to give to the VAT refund desk.

No form, no refund.

Yes, and this would have been easy enough to find out. I always claim VAT without hassle. Apart from getting stuck behind dozens of Chinese that claim serious refunds.
