Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. 10% VAT, 5% service charge. Pretty normal in hotels and restaurants that comply with the law.

What law requires a 5% service charge and where does that money go?

Pretty normal.

Back in the day I managed to exact small revenge at a certain riverside corner rooftop bar with abysmal service. It was that bad I poured myself a beer from the customer side of the bar & enjoyed a freebie unimpeded to offset the entirely crappy service (talking 20 mins+ from ordering a beer to receiving the square root of sod all). Was happy to pay the service charge on the second beer, since the service on the first was excellent - perfect pour! :-)

I was there recently and the service has improved a lot, I agree it was terrible before.

No law requires the service charge, but most international hotels in Temple Town charged it when I worked there. Cannot speak for other hotels, but at the hotel I worked, the entire service charge was given to the staff. Averaged USD 90 extra a month.
