I swear, one day...

This is a part of our Cambodia forums to chat about anything Cambodia-related. This discussion forum is at the top of our site because it's usually the busiest part of the expat community chatter with random topics on just about everything, including expat life, Khmer politics, Cambodian blogs we have or have come across, or whatever else our members want to discuss. Whether you're an expatriate, tourist, Cambodian or random traveler just passing through South East Asia, you are welcome to talk about anything or start new topics yourselves.

I asked my girlfriend what the chanting is about, she said she doens't know because it's in Sanskrit  . So all this noise and almost nobody even knows wtf it's about.

Serious question: I really wonder how they did this before electricity was invented (and amplifiers). I understand it has to be that loud in order to inform the rest of the community about the death.
"Tradition" is a myth. Everywhere it is, in reality, a changing and adapting animal - people picking and choosing what to keep and discard. Tradition - when I hear that word I always cringe as it means absolutely nothing.

Also, there was a recent widely conducted study done that proved conclusively that Khmers (especially urban variety) have noticeably less hearing capability. They need considerably more decibels to hear what we white folk can start to perceive at a lower level.

So..what to do? A brand new NGO to distribute hearing aids country-wide it appears...hmmm...
