This site has been loading very slow recently, then I saw record number of users online just now, which could explain it. I can't tell what all the new viewers are looking at. Is it the missing plane thread?

it was enough traffic that it crashed our sql server... looking into what they were hitting/where they were from now.

Literally crashed? Never seen that before with high load.

Well, I assumed that was the service down. A power cycle of the server cleared it... I didn't do a lot of diagnosis prior to that as I wanted the site back up asap.

No crash log?

You should look into it. And possibly consider switching to PostgreSQL instead, unlike MySQL (last I checked) it's full ACID complying and, unlike MySQL, cares about data integrity
