Supressed Rage
Supressed Rage
Do you think Cambodian males in general have an issue with this?
So many times we read of a mob killing for some rather innocuous event. Not in retaliation for the killing of a loved one or the rape or of a loved one.
Just your regular old petty theft sometimes seem to bring out the beast of a seemingly quiet gentle people. These are not under the honour killings label the psychos of the Mideast claim.
Does this exist in all societies?
Scratch through that thin veneer of civility and another animal appears.
In Cambodia it just seems that veneer is very, very thin. IMHO.

Re: Supressed Rage
I grew up in Africa and it is the same there. I think this is what happens in societies where law enforcement is ineffective and corrupt.
Re: Supressed Rage
It seems like it's human nature right across the board regardless of nationality, with the possible exception of some tribal groups. Just look at the two world wars. Give humans an excuse to kill and they'll do their best to slaughter each other by the millions.

As a result of writing the book, Reich was kicked out of the Communist Party of Germany. The book was banned by the Nazis when they came to power. He realized he was in danger and hurriedly left Germany disguised as a tourist on a ski trip to Austria. Reich was expelled from the International Psychoanalytical Association in 1934 for political militancy. The book was ordered to be burned on request of the FDA by a judge in Maine, United States in 1956, amongst other works by Reich.

Re: Supressed Rage
Cambodia's Curse talks about this exact topic in length - A dysfunctional country that has suffered PTSD over and over again, and the cascading effect it has had on the psychology of ordinary citizens.
It's a pretty good analysis in my opinion, though many others feel the book is garbage.

Re: Supressed Rage
What do you expect OP?
Alot of people you meet in the streets here have killed ,withness killing you want them to be calm all the time?
Of course some Khmer males are mad from what happened in the past and they are gonna go fucking beserk if pushed too far.

Re: Supressed Rage
i witnessed mob killings of pickpockets caught in buses twice during my 4 years in and around Jakarta.
bystanders hastened to participate.
and when i say killing, i mean they were literally beaten, stoned and kicked to death right on the spot.
there was no time for the cops to intervene.
took about 2-3 minutes.
amok is a Malay word meaning blind terror.
it is a frequent occurrence in Indonesia for an individual to run amok chopping random victims indiscriminately.
so yes, i think there is a lot of suppressed rage, given the horror of showing one's true feelings in the close knit rice growing societies - it is bound to boil over sometimes.

Re: Supressed Rage
I'd say there is also a cultural factor involved.
Due to the practice of avoiding conflict whenever possible, aggression is suppressed. "Control your feelings" is something I've often heard from locals as the appropriate answer to frustration or anger.
At one point, though, maybe triggered by a small incident, the bucket is full and all that anger is let out. And that can be ugly.

You absolutely must not lose face. Hold it all in until it bursts in acts of extreme violence. Thailand has a similar issuebong.kuit wrote:I'd say there is also a cultural factor involved.

Re: Supressed Rage
In a country where most people have next to nothing the beatings are their way of ensuring that what little they have doesn't get stolen.
