I’m not talking about girly bars. I’m talking about just being out and about and happening to catch someone’s eye in that everyday ‘oh, he/she’s quite nice’ kinda way.

I know that Khmers (normal Khmers, not the ones involved in the sex industry) are typically a lot more shy than westerners and are unlikely to make any kind of move even if they did find you attractive.

But does anyone know of any subtle hints to look out for? If I just glance and give a brief smile I find it can go one of two ways. You have to get the smile just right if you don’t want to come across as a someone who’s just chosen their next victim. It’s an art form that I’ve largely yet to master.

Are there any secret Khmer cultural ‘giveaways’ that they use when they want to show an interest in you, that anyone is aware of? A touch of the right knee with the left hand? Fiddling with a particular earlobe? Threatening to call the police if I smile at them in that way again?

They're no different from any other women around the world. There are prudish women the world over, just as there are nightclub slappers - the ratios may differ country to country, but otherwise a woman is a woman & gauge your approach accordingly to what end of the prude/slapper spectrum you're playing on.
