Is substance addiction a myth?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. i dont think there is an addictive gene(s)...
but that addiction has to do with "willpower", is certainly a myth.

it probably depends on your existing "condition" (sort of illness, our "innate layout") - we all have one or more and perhaps the worst are the ones we inherited from the mothers (which they inherited from their mothers etc etc).

poisons/illegal substances can do something "good" to you.
science is slowly waking up - they found that a lot of schizophrenics are cannabis users.
they suspect, that they dont become schizophrenic by the cannabis, but that the schizophrenia makes them suspectible to cannabis consumption - what is of course the most logical thing, as it "helps" (eases) them.

and so goes is with other "substances" as well.

Everyone is to some extent an addict to some thing, or things. From caffeine to cocaine, from sugar to smack, it is not a case of addicts and non-addicts but simply where you are on the scale.

So substance addiction is a fact, if we choose to follow that addiction to excess is imho, down to a basic Pain v Pleasure balance.

true, but someone mentioned before, that the typical withdrawal (of nicotine it was i think) doesnt occur to him.

with others, it was found that nicotine addiction is as strong as cocaine addiction (according to medical research, see wiki).

Most of the original research into nicotine addiction was sponsored by the cigarette industry. Makes you wonder why, then again, maybe it doesn't

Who wrote the rules on defining addiction?
Is the "addiction industry" of doctors, clinics, hospitals and rehabs just an elaborate conspiracy to make profit from the hapless?
Why can't people "decide" to drink 15 drinks everyday?
Why can't people "decide" to shoot heroin once in awhile?
Is there such an animal as an alcoholic? What pattern of drinking determines if someone is an "alleged" alcoholic?
the PROBLEM is the mutating nature of modern American language (I won't go so far as to say it's anyone elses failing). You're "addicted" to the internet, "addicted" to chocolate. This is all BULLSHIT. The old textbook definition factored in PHYSICAL NEED. In tandom with, of course, withdrawal. So fine, you're addicted to barbiturates, and if you try to kick it on your own it can KILL you (as it did to a twin Dr.s some years ago). Alcohol is an addicting substand, the more you drink, over time, the more you need for the same kick. Habituation. Another factor in real addiction. Anything else is modern junk science, PC tree hugging, pansy ass BULLSHIT.

once again I'm thinking maybe I should read the whole thread before replying but this has been a burr under my saddle for a LONG TIME so I'm gonna let fly now.

I can drink not drink it doesnt really effect me. smoked pot for 4 or 5 years...move to cambodia totally forgot all about it. I did prefer smoking over drinking back in states but towards the last 2 years my highs ended in me being paranoid as fuck and being a vegetable on the couch with my guitar.

Also not to knock the old guys here but nobody respects an old pot smoker. We respect the alcoholics much more...cause theirs always a story behind it. Vietnam 71 saw my friend get blown to chunks. The bitch took the kids and fucked my brother!

Wheres the story behind the pot smoker?? I'm a free lance journalist for a human rights newspaper? I was the county hacky sack champion in 1994. how gay.

Me being a light weight in drinking. i will definitely say the alcohol in this country has to be fake. I'm 70 kilos and a 3 beer queer. So for me to knock down 4 or 5 scotches and not even have the slightest buzz means somethings wrong.
Dopey...Super Whiskey is 40 proof. Don't go thinkin you manned up. Khmers are lightweight drinkers who binge drink at speed. That you can keep up with em ain't sayin much.

The more we can adjust social thinking that everyone is addicted to something(s) the more we can begin to support and not exclude people. If it is a scale with Chocolate at one end and Heroin at the other, just for example, then it is where we each find ourselves and we can move away from just social rejection.

I am not trying to play down the pain some people are experiencing or the sheer determination others show in fighting, such addictions but if wider society could accept scale and not just black & white, then we are better placed to building a more workable mechanism to support those who seek it and to control the content of those who do not.

Just my opinion
