Students abandon IIC university

Post by explorer »

IIC university is in a part of Phnom Penh which was once part of Kandal province. It is on the road between PP and Ta Kmao, approximately 1 km from Ta Kmao.

Some universities send representatives to high schools to promote their university.

Other than that, many students dont think too much about where they will attend university until they get their year 12 exam final results. If they fail, they normally dont go to university anyway.

Many do no research about the universities.

Many just go to a university where a friend goes, or where they can easily rent a room nearby.

So students enrol at IIC. After they start at IIC, other students tell them that IIC is not as good as other universities. So some students move to other universities. As students leave, others get the idea, and the exodus begins.

Next year the process is repeated.

IIC tries various things to combat this.

If a new student pays for one year of tuition, plus one year of English classes, they are actually charged for one and a half years of English classes. So if they leave at the end of one year, they dont attend 6 months of English classes they have paid for.

IIC gives a computer to all students who pay 2 years tuition up front. They are very cheap, low performance computers, which westerners would not use, but good for poor Cambodians who cant afford a computer.

When students move to another university after one year, the first university normally provides documentation so they can start 2nd year at the new university. IIC is refusing to provide this documentation, in an attempt to force students to stay.

Most students are leaving anyway, but have to repeat 1st year at the new university.

Anyone who knows students who may attend IIC should warn them.

Then how does IIC fix its reputation? They have so few students they must be running at a loss, which makes it very difficult.

I dont know, but anyone wanting to start their own university, it may be up for sale in the future.

Does anyone know of anything which can be done so students dont have to repeat 1st year?

This is a year of their life, and a lot of money for a poor Cambodian student.

As is happening in our western countries, when the students finish university they are still not qualified to a standed that gets them into a decent job. Plus the lack of work experience on their cv makes it easier for them to just get a job in the garment industry or bar working along with their friends.

I have noticed one thing,,, the cost of sending a student to a private school has sky rocked in the last few years yet the quality of education and teachers that I have checked on, has remained the same,,, low. I pay for 3 girls to learn Khmer at Westland International School at Takhmau, and two of them also study English in the afternoon, but the main object of the school seems to be to make money.
The oldest girl at 16 y also studies at a Chinese school which only charges $200 a year and I think that's the way to go in the future.

Why do I think like that ???? well it's experience. My eldest girl that I paid for schooling for from the time she was 5y to 17 years,,, now 18 y and works in a bar.

In 2004 on her first day dressed for school who would have thought she was going to school and would end up working in a bar.

No, it's not sad for her cause she loves the job,,, Doesn't drink or smoke and it's not a girly/hostess bar that she works in.
However, it is sad for me cause I expected more and spent a lot of money on her education.. But I have also excepted the fact that some kids going to school find it hard to learn and remember things, and I am a good example of that, but again that does not necessary mean that one will not be successful in life and business.

The measure of life is NOT in the income.

The measure of life is satisfaction that does not pain others and how we treat others.

Anyone who tells you different should post on another forum.

That's good to hear. The problem is that even with good education here, the opportunities are not always there. There is a fair amount of nepotism around, and even if someone gets a good position the salaries for graduates aren't at all great. I hope she does well anyway.
