Strawberries!

Post by Jacket »

So, I went to Lucky Supermarket the other day and just had a snoop around when I saw strawberries for the second time in this country. (The first time I ever saw strawberries in Cambodia it was on a birthday cake, that must have cost a little fortune)
So what do you think that 7 or 8 decently sized strawberries go for in this country? 3$? 4$? nope 7 (or so) decently sized strawberries can be yours for the princly sum of nine dollars! Fuck me sideways! A kilo goes for 3 bucks or so in Thailand (if memory serves me right). So why ain't nobody importing that shit? I'm serious. The Khmers seem to be willing to pay a fair price for strawberries. So,what's going on there? Have I just discovered a market gap? Buy ten kilos for 30 bucks, sell 'em for 300 and you've still made pretty good money for a short trip to Thailand. OMFG

I tried to grow organic strawberries in rural Thailand. It was a disaster. Couldn't keep the insects away from them and the yield was so low. Raised beds (not cheap) and and covering nets an absolute must. Most strawberry growers I saw there used lots of nasty insecticides and herbicides and chemical fertilizers to get a decent crop. I personally would never eat a Thai-grown strawberry...having seen the amount of toxic chemicals they must contain. Probably quite profitable at those prices you mention, though, although now even the toxic chemicals required are getting too costly for many.

Seem to recall the lucky ones are USA imports. Raspberries are even more expensive.

Well, you couldn't eat any fruits or vegetables in S.E. Asia if the "oh so horrible" chemicals are of concern to you.

Yes the "oh so horrible" are a serious concern to me....and the people I care about. You can easily find less chemically tainted fruits and vegetables in the rural areas, Not every farmer is so short sighted and careless. For you and your family, I say by all means go ahead and eat away without a second thought of health concerns. Drink the chemical poisons directly for all I care. :thumb:

Millions of people eat that stuff every day and they're fine. They serve you a little bowl of pure MSG with your food here for fuck's sake. No one here give's half a shit about chemicals.

I don't think most consumers in Cambodia give a shit about organic, but where they're from could play a factor in price. Were they labeled as imported from the USA? I'd guess Cambodians would pay less for Thai strawberries than American strawberries, but there's probably some profit to be made there.

I never go to Lucky anymore, but I've seen strawberries numerous times there. Blueberries as well. I'm just surprised they don't import from NZ or South America. The American ones aren't really good. If they grow them in Thailand, they should import from there. I can't imagine them costing 4$/kilo unless they're in season though...

I visited a strawberry farm in Malaysia last November. Their fruit did look good... But I never tasted so bad strawberries.
