U.S. Embassy Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Security Message for U.S. Citizens: Possible Demonstrations in Phnom Penh

March 29, 2015

The United States Embassy in Phnom Penh alerts U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Cambodia of the possibility of political demonstrations in Phnom Penh on Tuesday, March 29, beginning at 2pm. There are media reports of planned demonstrations at the National Assembly building, an unspecified United Nations Office, Cambodian National Rescue Party Headquarters at Chakangré Leu, and in the Tuol Kouk district.

U.S. citizens are reminded of the Embassy’s existing guidance that even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and have the potential to escalate into violence without warning. The U.S. Embassy recommends you avoid areas where demonstrations are taking place and exercise caution when in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests or demonstrations and immediately leave any area where there are large gatherings. You should remain alert of local security developments by monitoring local news reports, exercising vigilance regarding your preparedness and personal security, remaining aware of your surroundings, and planning your activities accordingly. Please follow the guidance below to receive the most updated security information from the U.S. Embassy.

I'd be more scared of terrorists of a certain religion targeting a soft target in an area with little serious anti-terrorist police presence.

If they could build bombs in a place like Belgium, they could easily find similar chemicals in SE Asia and stage attacks on a place like Pub Street or the Riverside.

There is a near zero chance of an ISIS attack in Cambodia. They attacked Brussels because it is the seat of European leadership not some S E Asian backwater where an attack would be forgotten minutes after it happened.

I note that once again Facebook weren't too keen on offering any way to show solidarity with the victims in the Lahore attack this week...

That is what we thought about Bali too, until it happened.

Actually Bali is in the middle of an Islamist state - attacks happen in those because would be martyrs are cheap and easy to come by. (Tunisia, Egypt, Ivory Coast, etc. are the same). Cambodia? It's a fucking sideshow with a happy but tiny Islamic minority. There's no strategic benefit of an attack by ISIS in Cambodia and Cambodia's own Muslim population doesn't seem to ascribe to the joys of martyrdom. There is zero chance of an attack in Cambodia. There is a much higher chance of a civil war which will have very little (if anything) to do with Islam and an awful lot to do with wealth distribution and racism.
