Spend less when you speak Khmer

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

It depends on where and what you are talking about.

If you go to Central Market, they always start out with a stupid high price, and the smart people have to negotiate down to a reasonable price.

If you try to buy a bicycle in Phnom Penh, they ask stupidly expensive prices. They just waste your time.

The same thing occurs in other tourist areas.

However, if you go to a shop in a country town where they sell to locals, they normally ask a reasonable price.

So you're saying there are higher prices in the tourist areas? Where's my notebook and pencil? I've gotta get this stuff down before it gets pulled from the Internet!

Soemtimes playing local does not work. An ex of mine complained that she had to pay MORE than barang for some things in the market so we did an experiment. We both tried to buy the same item of clothing at sperate timesand i gota bigger discount.
Why? well the stall owner explained it very simply. "she is local. She will come back a lot. if i give her a discount she will want a discount every time she comes and so will her friends. You are foreigner. if i do not selll to you today you will be on the plane tomorrow and I will lose a sale".
There is some logic too that..
