Another Aging Expat Goes Missing...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

How bad is it, on a scale of Saudi Arabia to Sihanoukville?

LOL, it's pretty fucking bad man. I won't go into any details because I understand that there's a young family member here concerned for his health but...the guy needs to get some help. And I say that as someone who drinks on a daily basis myself.

You'd be amazed at how many chronic alcoholics there are in Saudi Arabia. The bar on my compound used to sell what tasted like fermented horse piss for $8 a pint. I was the only one of my colleagues who didn't drink at least a gallon of it a day, not because I'm not an alcoholic but because it tasted so dreadful.

On special occasions (read days that weren't weekdays) bottles of scotch, vodka, gin, etc. could be purchased too... for $150 a bottle. We are not talking premium brands here but rather the stuff that goes for about $6 a bottle elsewhere. They had trouble keeping supply up with demand.

The police, religious police, etc. aren't allowed onto a compound without a very specific warrant signed off by some very important people (e.g. it never happens); so getting drunk is actually pretty easy - as long as you can afford both the top end compound and the booze itself. Which is pretty easy when you don't know anyone who clears less than $100,000 USD a year after tax in Saudi. English teachers aren't invited...

And just last week, the religious police lost their power to arrest or even pursue suspects, LoL, basically turning them into nothing more than annoying tattletales.

I saw that and about time too. My boss was a Scottish woman married to a Syrian man. When we first arrived in Saudi; we all stayed in the same grotty 4 star hotel in the center of Riyadh. My boss arrived alone as her husband was working in Dubai. That weekend he flew in to meet her. The hotel staff called the muttawah... they spent the night with 6 muttawah in their bedroom while the government relations officer had to roust people from their beds to come and prove that they were in fact a married couple. Fucking clowns.

Though my Kiwi mate pissed off a couple of elderly fat, muttawah and then ran away backwards filming their puffing, pathetic chase of him across the car park. Just as it looked like the plumpest one was about to expire - he jumped in a taxi and sped off leaving them in his dust.

My favourite moment came when the head of Riyadh's muttawah came to visit our offices and gave us a 2 hour screaming, raving bollocking about letting women work in close proximity to men... and then promptly followed this by giving us his daughter's CV and asking if she could have a job...

Haha, all great stories, but yeah, the hypocrisy here takes the cake.

Well, he's still missing, according to his son:

Image

"HELP! MY DAD IS MISSING
My dad Søren Goth has been missing since the 16th of April. No one have seen or heard from him since. He is from Denmark, 61 years old living in Sihanoukville and currently very ill having difficulties walking. He used to spent most of his time at the Copenhagen Bar at "Krong Preah Sihanouk" with fellow danish friends. He traveled to Sihanoukville from Denmark about 3 years ago and lives at Wanna Guesthouse.
If you have seen or heard from my dad please write to me and let me know. Thank you.
