Some people don't understand even if they are told
Some people don't understand even if they are told
A friend had an automatic motorbike. She had an accident on it. She sold the damaged motorbike cheap, and bought another one with gears. She told me you can ride a motorbike with gears the same as an automatic. You just leave it in 3rd gear all the time. She doesnt understand gearboxes and clutches, so you cant explain it from that perspective. I told her if she just leaves it in 3rd gear, it will need to be repaired sooner. She doesnt understand, and doesnt listen, just rides the motorbike in 3rd gear all the time.
Another friend is a dangerous driver. He does whatever he wants and everybody else has to give way to him. He doesnt think about safety, or how much he inconveniences other people on the road. I told him he is a dangerous driver, and gave him examples of things he could do better. I also told him, if he has an accident there could be serious consequences. A couple of weeks later, a friend of his was involved in an accident. He pulled out in front of a motorbike. The motorbike hit the side of the car, and the rider was killed. His friend does not seem to be concerned about killing someone. The police have told him to pay $2000 to the dead riders family. He is concerned about negotiating a lesser amount. My friends driving may improve 1% now. The problem is the fundamental thought process. You do whatever you want, and dont care about others.
One of the big problems in Cambodia is that many people dont understand even if they are told. They have never seen any other way.
As more people become educated, you should see a slow gradual improvement in the way things are done here.
I will point out, not all drivers in Cambodia are bad. There are some who drive well on roads where a lot of others drive very badly.

Maybe it's your approach. No one likes to be "told" what to do or how to do it. Perhaps you should consider a different approach in order to change their habits.

If you enjoy noise pollution and obnoxious driving practices, Phnom Penh is the place for you!
This.

You sound like someone who’s just got here and doesn’t understand the Cambodian way.
You can tell them and explain as much as you like. They won’t listen or learn.
It’s the way it is.

I thought everyone just drove their bikes in 2nd. 3rd is only for special occasions, you can't start it in 3rd.

This one never gets old!! I think it should be printed on large billboards and hung at several different locations around PP.

Couldn't that be said about any people? I think people in general just are really thick. A lot of this needs to come from education at a young age, also did he mention that they were Cambodian?

Yeah, I think he's confused as well. It would be hard to start in 3rd. To be honest, I always start mine in second. No, it won't "break it". Depends on the bike and how it's geared obviously. Some bikes prefer a first gear start, but mine is way smoother in second. Makes driving in traffic way easier than being in first. First is for steep inclines only, or with a heavy passenger or if I want a fast start from a red light.cptrelentless wrote:I thought everyone just drove their bikes in 2nd. 3rd is only for special occasions, you can't start it in 3rd.
