Some Hotels Charge $5/$10 for Food/Drinks Brought to Room?
Re: Some Hotels Charge $5/$10 for Food/Drinks Brought to Roo
Durian is not the only food that smells.
Food smells in a room can be a bitch to get rid of and if the hotel is busy the next guest will complain about the smell. It's the same with cigarette smoke. And there's the problem of food stains on linen, food falling behind a not-to-easy to access area (behind a heavy bed for example) and the waste or container goes in the bin that sits in the room till the cleaner goes in the next day.
We are more than happy for guests to bring their own food into our hostel and we will even supply them with plates and cutlery but we are in the minority with that. Almost all budget back packer hostels in Cambodia have strict no outside food AND drink policies.

Well, I have never worked in a backpacker hostel and we have certainly never put restrictions on our guests apart from aforementioned Durian.

My hosteling days are long behind me but I thought hostels usually had communal kitchens and bringing in outside food was a major part of the hostel experience. I'm really not familiar with hostels in Cambodia though.IraHayes wrote:Almost all budget back packer hostels in Cambodia have strict no outside food AND drink policies.

Non of the hotels I have stayed in had any problem with food, in fact most of them did room service any way. The only restrictions I came across were with regard to smoking, but one had a choice of smoking or non smoking rooms. However in some places I have stayed which you got depended on the accuracy of the rocket fire.hanno wrote:Well, I have never worked in a backpacker hostel and we have certainly never put restrictions on our guests apart from aforementioned Durian.

You should post this on Flyertalk GM. It would start an epic shitstorm. I'll do it for you if you want.

Did they check you before you enter your room? Why they know if that is foods or something else?hanno wrote:

You should do that and post the link here. I don't think GM is a flyertalk member.
I'm curious if they Flyertalk road warriors have encountered this scenario before. Like I said, I remember one hotel/guesthouse in Phuket that had signs up explaining that certain common areas (pool, lobby, etc.) were "service areas" and you shouldn't consume outside food in them. But they had no problem with you bringing food to your room.
If you're staying at a nice hotel with restaurants, etc. I do think it's a little classless to have a pizza delivered. I've brought McDonald's/Burger King up to my room at nice hotels and I always feel a little sheepish standing in the elevator with my food, probably stinking up the elevator, and trying to avoid eye contact with other guests in the elevator (I do that anyway regardless of whether I have food).

Most of the TA comments mention how shite the food is. That could have something to do with the hotel charge. Eat here or else.
Must say it sounds appealing.

Agree, the Lux Riverside Hotel and Apartments are just down the road, I would advise GM go there. I used to have an apartment there, nice place with undercover parking and no hassles, and they also have a restaurant attached now.hanno wrote:

http://www.luxriversidehotels.com/ Also seems to get good reviews on TA http://www.tripadvisor.com.au/Hotel_Rev ... _Penh.html

^^^^^ Yup, I lived there for a while too. $750/month for the 1 bdrm. I don't care for their regular rooms however. I'd see if the Lone Star would give you a monthly deal too. The rooms are big and have a kitchen, though no burners or cookware. I think they're a bargain at $25/night.
