Sihanoukville Police Chief: Shakedowns of Tourists to Stop

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Understand and appreciate local business owners being pissed off about the rozzers, $2-3 donations are almost ok but $20-$50 is way over the score. It can only have a negative impact on folks either staying in Sihanoukville a few days longer or any return visit.
Agreed, would suggest safety in numbers with any direct campaign to highlight these practices and deal with the fuzz.
The combined local babylon will no doubt see it as a real -$$ threat.
Maybees use the kampot polis as a comparison in any discussions or negotiations, there are heaps if not hunders of tourists on hire motos every week but the local pigs seem to take a seasoned and rational approach.

Ok, here is the letter in English and Khmer we are handing over to our guests that rent a motorbike. We do advise them that they should only use it if they did not commit a violation of the traffic rules and regulations, e. g. wearing no helmet, and not use it on a routine check for weapons, when everybody is pulled over. We also tell them cops usually ask for an international drivers license. It is not clear whether they need one in Cambodia. We checked with a lawyer. The law is not explicit on that. But explain that to an uneducated moronic cop. Anyway, along with everything that has been posted here it should help limit these brazen shake-downs.

Feel free to use it but you need somebody to report it in case the guests/tourists bring it back to you.https://docs.google.com/document/d/1iQW ... -OqCo/edit

Ok, if you are renting out motorbikes then you should definitely tell your customers what to expect :hattip:
Another thing is that tourists don't expect to pulled over by cops for "nothing" and sometimes they panic and pay. Might help to tell them that this is just routine and to stay calm (and not to get aggressive, or worry too much .)
Please let us know how this pans out.

Even after logging in to Google Accounts, the first link gives me 'Error 404 (Not Found)' and the second link gives me 'Error 403 (Forbidden)'.
