SHV Foreigners living in the dumps (ie.40-60$ rooms)

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Some parts of the UK are not so hot!

Slum conditions in 2016 Britain show little has changed since shocking pictures of the 1960s

Sandrine, 46, is mopping, trying to keep her place in good order, but it is an uphill struggle. She sleeps across two plastic garden chairs and shares a toilet with neighbours in this block of flats in Enfield, North London. 2016.

I had planned to retire in Snookyville on the pension but found the better option. Import the Khmer family and live in far north Queensland. Living the dream for several days already, cheap food and wine, lots of free entertainment for the kids, really cheap clothes cheaper than Cambodia and better.
The kids have started to swim like fish already, doctors and schools are free and the place is clean and orderly.
The kids are worth $10,000 a year each, the pension is $22000 and now we have work as well at our complex, so about $50,000 a year to work for 7 hours a week at home.
A brand new car to explore the region and working for an hour a day for 50K- I think its called living the dream. Fuck Snookyville and Cambodia.

Good on ya! I would do exactly the same if I was in your position, assuming you have paid a fair amount of taxes in your adulthood and iirc you did fully adopt.
Some western countries give ridiculous amounts for child benefit paymentsp, although it would seem Aus trumps them all! Some people abuse these, basically having kids as a work choice, although some countries lower the amounts after the first second child i think.
While I'm not totally in agreement with the whole thing, it is what it is and certainly my opinion would change if I had kids. Unfortunately many people abuse it; I know a few back home and I do call them out on it, basically joking that I should just forward my tax payment directly to them. It is somewhat disconcerning the level of 'Nanny state' that most western countries are at though, and it does really drop productivity IMO.

Personally I would have no qualms claiming these later on In life if I was in a tax bracket that permitted it as for many years already and for the forseable future have and will be paying more taxes back in my homeland than my total yearly living costs including travel back there every year, and have never directly claimed any benefits, medical care (except for a few stitches) etc. since I finished Uni and left more than 10 years ago.

Edit: I just had to check the Aus gov calculator to believe it, those are crazy amounts, plus there's child care, etc. Probably
More than twice what my country gives out and it seems the amounts don't drop if you have 3,4,5,6 kids(although I could be mistaken)

How bad are these so called "dumps""? I had a room in Siem Reap for $60 a month, plus $8 or so for electricity, no AC or wi-fi. The room was near Psa Kroum Market and though it wasn't so nice, I chose to live there because I spent little time in the room. I was either working or strolling around the city. Isn't it possible that these foreigners choose to live cheaply because they're out and about all day?

Order your food and booze from the online shops/distributors and get your network of bitches...errr babes going, you'd never have to leave. Hire yourself a cute bartender too. Hell, might as well rent yourself a villa with all the savings from those old 150$ binges!
In SHV you can still find some khmer style 85ish sqm apts for 160-200$ semi furnished on a good road in town. I've been renting one for three years for 150$, end unit with wrap around balcony and tons of windows. Cheeky bugger just upped the rent to 180$ on my new contract though! If you're looking for western style layout though you'll easily pay double for less space, and usually on some backroad. Didn't BDS just build a new nice western apt block? Anybody know where his place is?

Sounds nice that u have a gov willing to give ya $$ for kids and obviously u worked a fair share to collect that amount of pension.

doesn't work for everyone, Living the dream???? Depends on what ur dream is plus ur still in Oz. After 30+ year out of America, i cant see moving back there just cause i am old.

Most Western countries are handing out large child benefits these days, but I don't think the US is one of them.

Some people live in slum dumps because they make them into that. Give them a new house, or a five star hotel room, and after six months it too will be a untidy dump. Some people are so disorganized that they make their rooms look like a dump. Now look at that picture and list each item and ask yourself ,,, is that item in the right place to make that room clean and tidy
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.
