Should I Go Back and Pay?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Should I Go Back and Pay?

Post by juansweetpotato »

Got stopped today going the wrong way with no helmet. I offered them the money I had on me (about 2200) . The cop refused it and was hoping for $10. I put him straight on that one and gave him the 'I'm on holiday, love Cambodia" spiel. He then said 'OK, then come back and pay me $5' I smiled and said 'OK'. What do you reckon? Is he really expecting me to go back? Saving face? or allowing for the possibility rather than just letting me go?

I got asked for $30 when the visa was $25 a few years ago on the Cambodian side of the border with Vietnam.

There was a big poster behind the guy stating $25, so I pointed to it and smiled, the guy just laughed and said ' We want to have a few beers'.

I went and bought a bottle of fake Johnny Walker for about $10 and had drinks with them, and they organised a taxi back to Phnom Penh for me $10 and the guy dropped me off at my door.

Very enjoyable trip, all in all, wifey thought I had shagged half of Vietnam obviously.
Jesus loves you...Mexico is great, right? ;)

I got pulled over once and the cop demanded extra cash, as usual. I said "You look like it's hot outside." He was sweat and he nodded. I offered a case of iced teas I had just bought and he smiled, took it and let me go. I think the teas were only $3-4 in comparison to the $25 he wanted.

Anyway, to me though, I say "Do what you say you will do." If I agreed to pay him $100, I would pay him $100. I would never agree to pay that kind of money, but you get the idea.

Going to change soon but for the moment nobody, Khmer or forigener should pay more than $2.50 for a car infraction or $1.25 for a bike infraction.

I've been stopped in the car twice this year and not been stopped on a bike for over five years now, both times I just smiled, greeted the pig formally in Khmer, asked him what the problem was, apologisied, showed my license, asked how much and he said "Dawb", so I gave him 10'000R and wished him a good day in Khmer and was on my way. 30 seconds both times.

Anytime they get pushy or start demanding higher sums, calmly smile and indicate you will pay the regular amount, and no more, wait for them to accept it without forcing the issue.

First stop was because I'd neglected to turn off my headlights and it was daytime.

Second was for no seatbelt being worn.
