Should we ask the mods for a small number of moderated threads?

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Should we ask the mods for a small number of moderated threads?

Post by StroppyChops »

Coming out of another thread that (like most threads) has a serious and valuable discussion underway, heavily hidden under layers of fluff and BS...

Should we ask the mods to allow a small number of heavily moderated threads for serious discussions? The OP could propose a thread to the mods, and if approved, would then have the job of moderating just that thread according to an agreed set of rules? Some suggested threads:

- A discussion on real solutions to abject poverty
- The current "child-sex trafficking is in the decline" discussion
- The visa situation
- Punchy's fight dates and photos

The OP would keep all posts on-topic and respectful, and refuse the usual clownery that makes good forum debate tedious.

Naturally, certain dickheads would be ostracised without further discussion.

Thoughts?

Yeah, there's every risk of becoming a serious playa. Wouldn't want that!

A valid idea, IMHO. Maybe have a serious discussions sub-forum?

Personally, it's probably just better for us to decide the tone of each topic and go from there.

If someone starts a topic about them just getting diagnosed with cancer, we should probably delete any "your mama" jokes.

But if someone starts a topic about forgiving them for being a drunk American, "your mama" jokes are fair game!

I kind of think it's much better to just use the same "rules" we have in the real world when it comes to what's appropriate and what's not, based on the topic/conversation at hand.

Sorry, was there some bullshit on the trafficking topic that need attention?

No, not at all - all good fun - but I wonder if the few of us that can mentally stretch a little bit further than bar-stool farts and prostitute ratings would appreciate and get value from some serious discussion, uninterrupted by moronic interjections.

All of this after you and Jamie (a MOD) had that, IMHO, excessive meme war?

If you're not prepared to be sensible yourself on a thread you start you can't expect other posters to follow.

Great idea,it is not as if they have other stuff to do. I bet they are getting moist at the thought of all that censorship. Lucky chaps.
If it is a yes I suggest 47 heavy moderated threads is an appropriate number . :thumb:

I had no real expectation of anyone, including myself, being entirely sensible for the whole thread, but there's some good content in there. And the meme outbreak was funny.

I'm in favour of a "Serious" section of the forum, but let's leave the moderating to the minimum in my opinion. If too much power goes to the moderators, it shows we're not really capable of being adults, so it doesn't say much about ourselves.

Btw, I fully admit to being a child at heart and like to take the piss out of things.

To be clear, I was suggesting the moderating for a "serious" thread be done by the OP, not the mods. For God's sake, Carl, the mods have to live too!
