Nobody is disputing that this is common or that this is mild by Cambodian standards, but that is hardly justification.

Given how the prisons are way beyond capacity and getting fuller, plus reports of police abuse, torture, and people being tossed in the can with lengthy sentences for petty property crimes, this dubious excuse is running thin. The rich may get away with crimes, and the police aren't much interested in investigating crimes in which the perp doesn't just fall in their lap, but if the perp isn't rich, gets caught and is handed to the police, there's a fair chance their future is rather bleak. No need to add an extrajudicial beat down or worse.

Moral of the story: if you want to steal from Khmers, go super big-time. They tolerate that, and even admire it.

They are a little wary of kicking someone who can kick back.

I felt uneasy watching that. That old woman trying to hit her feet with a shoe, as her feet were the only exposed bit, as she sat curled up to protect herself from the mob. Nasty old bitch.

I've watched a lot of Khmer mob beatings, and it was honestly one of the most tame I've seen.

I thought this one was comical. That old lady is going in, out, left, right, over and under that security guy to get in as many licks as possible.

I think one thing that makes it look more brutal is the fact that it happened in a modern looking mall.

These beatings typically happen on dirt roads or outside a rundown market with a bunch of dusty motodopes taking cheap shots.

This kind of shit looks out of place in a modern place.
