SEA bloggers and freedom of speech - Singapore teen arrested

Post by Anchor Moy »

Crackdown on freedom of speech in Singapore - teen calls Lee Kuan Yew "a horrible person" and gets arrested. True that the post was a bit bad-taste (because Lee Kuan Yew has just died), but hey the guy is a 17 year old geek. Hardly reason for the authorities to panic.

Not a good time to be a blogger in SEA right now - arrests in Singapore, Burma, Thailand, Vietnam at least.

So far, no reports yet of local bloggers arrested ? Does this mean that the KOW is a beacon of light for liberty of expression in SEA ? Or that the authorities are a bit slow on the uptake, or just not worried ?
After all they have some powerful "anti-libel" laws at their disposal. Other Cambodian media - TV, radio, newspapers - have all had their problems, so surely we should expect an online crackdown one of these days ?

Not so much for us foreigners, but for people like S---- we have your name and address; GM has told us everything.

A teenage boy who posted a video describing late founding prime minister Lee Kuan Yew as a “horrible person” has been arrested by Singapore police.

YouTube blogger Amos Yee uploaded the eight-minute video, called ‘Lee Kuan Yew Is Finally Dead!’ on 27 March.

Police have confirmed that a 17-year-old male Singaporean has been arrested.

In the video, the teenager said: “Lee Kuan Yew was a horrible person, because everyone is scared.

“Everyone is afraid if they say something like that, they might get into trouble…which, give Lee Kuan Yew credit, that was primarily the impact of his legacy.

“But I’m not afraid.”

You left out "or the local authorities control the media in such a way that when these things happen they don't get 'reported'?"

I considered that too. But the Khmer kids are on social media all the time, so it is not easy for the authorities to keep things quiet. The kids are probably more tech-savvy than the authorities. Also, when the authorities do clamp down they come down like a ton of bricks - discretion is not their forte (to say the least.)
