Re: robbed
lets see
last time my rented home was robbed they came in thru the ceiling but that was 20 years ago.
My home here backs up against a rubber tree plantation, no bars on windows, only screens, never lock the house and the Burmese workers walk past the house each day to and from work, cash is on the desk, in drawers, on tables and in the hidden safe bolted to the floor in the 2nd bedroom. keys for the car are left on the floor of the car so i don't lose them.
NEVER had anything taken or stolen in the past 12 years i have lived here
i carry only a token $100 in my wallet and drivers licenses.atm's and cc's
Cash goes in pocket all the time
Past 30 years
when i travel with cameras/laptop have yet to have anything lost/stolen an many is the time the ladies i brought home were from dubious backgrounds. Only place i was truly robbed was in India but that was back in the 70's sleeping on a train.
Oh wait, i did have some small stuff stolen one night when i stayed at the pickled parrot back in 2008, but i saw the thief slip thru the bars as he was making his getaway, grabbed for his tail but he got away clean

In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

I have a bankbook for my local account, I assume all banks here would give you a book when you open an account.frank lee bent wrote:bank books?

Re: robbed
A fellow poster showed me where unknown parties had over time been gradually realigning the individual coils of the razor wire along the top of his compound wall to create gaps, presumably to put a foot on to climb over the wall. Just a few mm at a time, and in inconspicuous places (e.g. behind a banana frond). This was in spite of the dog in the yard. Someone was in it for the long game.
And do you have an auto-winder for that?TheGrinchSR wrote:And that's not accounting for my watch... which is worth more than the other kit all by itself.

Re: robbed
I love my watch. I've never owned a car (because I can't drive). I've never bought a house (because I can't stay in one place for long enough to make it worthwhile). But I had always wanted a Swiss watch ever since I was a little kid... and when I finally got a job paying insane cash in Bahrain, I spent two month's salary on a watch.
The irony is that while I love it very much. I almost never wear it because I make my living on a keyboard and it's bloody irritating to wear a watch while I type...

Re: robbed
Home: Safe bolted to floor. Three different alarms in house when I'm gone. Computer wire locked to deck.
Biker wallet attached to belt of pants.
Away. Small lockable/portable pistol safe with wire to loop around something solid and a very loud small portable car alarm attached to the wire.
Everything of value outside of house chained and locked down.
Car alarm in truck.
Large tactical razor sharp Kukri knife next to head of bed. Long Stun baton next to Kukri. (Well they won't let me have a Colt 45 so these are new best.)

Re: robbed
Sure, keep your pants, camera, wallet, laptop away from the windows so they can't use the old stick & hook method. And maybe have a place (or safe/lock box) to keep your money safe from the maid, or wandering neighbor kids, or hookers you might have over. But I'd be a lot more concerned about securing your home than finding a hiding place for the few dollars you have laying around. Barang get murdered here (sometimes in terrible ways) when they surprise a thief that has gotten into the house. That should NEVER EVER happen, ever. If it does, if they manage to get in while you're there (and asleep,) something is seriously amiss and needs to be fixed, and it's not finding a better hiding place for your cash.

I installed $1.2 k of aircon here, and neglected to note the absence of any bedroom door.
Not so sure all measures where in place, like doors.

Re: robbed
Nah then, welcome to Cambodia. Happened to me several times. These guys are catlike artists. A room on the second floor is no problem to them. Soundlessly they climb up go through barred windows and doors. Once they went through my barred and locked (2 padlocks)balcony door stole my money (was just $ 300 or so) and went out through the entrance door. I didn't hear a thing.frank lee bent wrote:had a break in last night and my wallet is gone from my pocket right next to my bed.
You are lucky that you didn't wake up. These are not only burglars but brutal killers. They are able to pick local padlocks within seconds (it's almost like you leave your doors open). I suggest you buy high security padlocks from the U.S. or Europe with magnetic keys
