That's some shit indeed.

I always sleep with my wallet in my pocket nearby. At least when I'm at home.

When in hotels/guesthouses I put everything out of site, and generally put my wallet under the mattress.

And if I'll be inviting over a female with questionable morals, damn near everything gets thrown under my mattress, including my phone connected to the charger/wall.

I know that's not fail proof, but at least they would need to move the mattress I'm sleeping on to get anything, and nothing is in view which would encourage anyone to come inside.

I also rely on other idiots to be stupider than me and more attractive to nosey thieves.

I've seen how many friends who should know better just leave everything out in plain view, almost asking to be robbed.

I've managed to open up many friends rooms after they've "locked up" or grab shit through their window just to show them what an easy target they are.

I also put my laptop on the top of the wardrobe when traveling. Again, not fool proof, but it just makes it a little harder than someone breaking in and grabbing whatever they see.

Would suck if my wallet got lifted, but always have another credit card and debit card somewhere else. Have also verified with a few cards that they will rush ship me a card anywhere if need be.

A bad hiding place is better than no hiding place.

This video still creeps me out, showing Gary Best bumping around a guesthouse with a big fucking knife, looking for shit to steal:

When I stay in Guesthouse's or [ luxury 5 star ] hotels, I always place some empty bottles or glasses on a chair against the door or windows so that any attempt to open the door or move the chair will result in a crashing smashing time.

I do not know in what "luxury 5 star" hotels you stay but I can assure you that, should your staff get nicked, it won't be by someone coming through the door at night with you in the room.

As Jerry said, it's best to keep a small stash elsewhere. I keep my wallet under a book on the table or some other slightly hidden place (not in immediate sight). I've also been keeping some money in an envelope in a hidden/unlikely location for a few years now. If I were out of town and they felt like rummaging everywhere, they'd have time to find it, but they wouldn't be able to find it in the dark or if pressed for time. Somewhere very high or low is good (in a cupboard by the cutlery, under a wardrobe, underneath the gas canister etc). They won't think to look in your cupboards or under the bed for cash.

It's partly because I don't like going to the ATM often, and also partly as an emergency measure. I've had my wallet stolen twice here (only two times I've been robbed), and it sucks. The first time I had to get my folks to WU me a hundred bucks or so as it was an extended holiday or something, and it can take the banks a few days to issue you a new card. Since then I've kept a small stash of cash (anywhere between 50-350$) hidden. I also keep the bare minimum in my wallet. Either way, getting cards stolen sucks as it can be a pain to get new ones.

Agreed, I've traveled the world over in 4 and 5 star hotels and never had so much as a packet of shampoo go missing. Though I wasn't best impressed to check into a 5 star hotel in Manchester once when it was clear someone had recently kicked the door down to the room and it hadn't been adequately repaired - so I made them change the room.

Guesthouses and low rent B&B's are a different proposition... and pretty much why I wouldn't stay in one. If I'm traveling with my computing and camera set up - that's more than $10,000 worth of gear, saving a few bucks on the hotel isn't worth the security risk. And that's not accounting for my watch... which is worth more than the other kit all by itself. I may have to un-bag stuff to get in the safe or have it signed and receipted for and placed in the hotel's main safe but that's the price of security.

It's also why I live in an apartment complex with 24 hour CCTV, security that never sleeps on the job, and as far away from the main entrance as it's possible to be. Robbing my place is too much effort for the opportunity thief and even professional thieves would know that the odds are they'd be caught before they left the premises.

Personally, I only use a wallet once or twice a year with formal dress.

The rest of the time I just have however much I need for that day in loose notes in my pockets. If I need to make transactions in larger amounts I have the notes sorted into envelopes which I hand over. Looks good/professional also.

No cards, just bank book and safe places.

I've never been successfully robbed (knocks on wood), though once my business was burgled but they got scared away and only took a low monetary value PC, luckily.
