I'm quite aware of that, thank you. There aren't a whole lot of native birds in the center of town other than the ones caught on the outskirts and sold to be released for merit. As for the disease thing, you could say that about any animal but I don't recall anyone I know getting killed by a pigeon recently. In local culture people consider pigeons and doves as peaceful and loving creatures. They say if you kill the Preap a dark cloud of crows and swarms of seagulls will descend on the land and eat all the rice and fish.

We learned as small kids from the farmers the difference between good creatures and 'vermin'

Although we don't eliminate them, we do get permits to hunt them when they get out of hand.

I got my pocket money from handing the farmers grey squirrels, pigeons, mink, rats, rabbits and crows with the .22 from their estates.

My first firearms licence came from 'Paddy' the sole and lonely copper from my village, who clipped my ear many a time.

Didn't you learn balanced ecological management as a boy?

All we need to fix the problem of these monopolising pigeons is to introduce some competition.. That'll keep the pigeon numbers down..

Take the aussie ibis as an example...ubiquitously known as 'bin chickens' and perfectly adapted for the human environment. Funny vid follows:

The only pigeons where I lived where Wood Pigeons and Racing Pigeons, which were not considered vermin.

A public education process.
to ensure the locals did not mistake them for a similar cambodian bird - the threatened Black-headed Ibis.

If they thought they were the endangered species they would quickly eat them all,
knowing that birds and animals that are about to go extinct taste 10X as good.

Very tasty.

Shooting them is prohibited except the count on the licence.

Anything other is poaching.

If I go thru with this crazy plan to move to Cambodia it won’t be Phnom Penh, but we can take a day trip for a good old fashioned pigeon slaughter. There is a group in NY that takes their terriers out ratting at night, I’ve corresponded with them as I also take her ratting around garbage piles. It can be a thing like that- the Phnom Penh Pigeon Punishers. We can get shirts and be a gang.

Plus pigeons don't bark all f@ing day and night, dont attack me as i ride past on my moto and I have never had a problem stepping in pigeon shit. If there were 2 animals I could ban from the planet it would be 1) dogs and 2) dog owners :stir:

I agree - irresponsible dog owners who allow their pets to harass people, especially bike riders, and bark stupidly are a fucking menace. Terminate.

And funnily enough but true. My Grandads frail sister slipped on pigeon shit and was in hospital with a broken leg. She sued the council and won.
