Riverside begger

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Twice I've run into him in passing and he asks for money, but when you tell him no, he unleashes a string of profanity in your direction, in French. Anybody else have this experience?
I haven't encountered him. My father had just arrived here for the first time in 2006 and after checking into the hotel we were strolling along the quay in the evening having a pleasant chat. Some English guy came up with a bogus "My passport and everything were..." But I cut him off with a stern "I don't have any money". He wandered off muttering profanities. I mentioned to my dad that if he wasn't there I would have thought about giving the guy a smack in the chops. We laughed. 8-)

Not mocking or deriding anyone, but the guy made an implicit threat against some kid. Should the kid be in fear of her life every time he sees the guy hanging out on the pavement? At least until he decides to end her life one day.

accessorizing your begging banner with a piece of angkor beer carton seems like a poor marketing strategy to me

He is from Sweden. 2-3 years ago he went around telling everybody he is dying from stomach cancer. Saw him once near the river. He had been knocked down by someone with a bottle. He tells a lot of stories.

I had a argument with that Swedish guy a week ago after he told me he was only doing it until his pension arrived. I told him in no uncertain terms what I thought of him,, begging from people that have less money and opportunity than him.

We all like to think we'll never end up like that, but I'm sure I'm not the only one who looks at the down-and-out foreigners with a knowing feeling at the back of my mind that there's always that possibility.

Most people who end up begging and living on the streets do so because they have mental health, alcohol, or drug issues (or any combination of them), so for those of us who don't suffer from that, the risk is greatly reduced, but no matter how many precautions we take or how sensibly we live our lives, none of us know what's around the corner, and no matter how much we tell ourselves "I'll never end up like that", we all know there are no certainties in life.

I'm a big believer in self responsibility but there's an element of luck to everyone's life and that luck can turn on us at any time.

RIP to the guy.

point of fact, if you have good friends wherever you are an you dont fuck up and burn ur bridges you would NEVER end up like these guys.

Truthfully;
how many that post here, dont have friends that would lend them a grand or 2 with only a phone call?

They are losers that have lost the plot thru bad/ wrong decisions in life or some serious bad luck
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST
