Petty, selfish and irresponsible are three words. What are yours?
You think its honorable letting people fuck you over? I should pay so as to put the Cambodian school for rich Cambodian kids mind at ease? The honorable thing would have been for the school to pay. And you think you know better than the doctor? For the 10th time, the doctor said to self isolate and that's what I'm doing.

For some reason I get the impression @BrazilBoy is not so happy in Cambodia and with the Cambodians. Especially the rich Cambodians and in particular their kids that he seems to teach. One could ask the question: what the hell is he doing here in the first place?

And then this drama about paying. I understand you were advised to self isolate. That's OK, and you've explained it to the guys visiting that wanted you to go to Russian hospital. You refused, not because of the self isolating decision, but because you have an issue with: who pays for this?

Didn't know that payment for teaching "rich Cambodian kids" (these are your words) is so shitty.

Wait a minute, do I get this right? That you are in 'self isolation' but with your family (wife and kids)?

If so, I think you are one of two:
  • attention seeking (for whatever reason)
  • totally irresponsible (if you really think you might have the Corona Virus)
I tend to think it's the first on above list.

E.g:

Plus if things go wrong, the Russian hospital is where the bodies of foreigners who have died are stored.

Serious, hope you and your family get better.

BrazilBoy wrote: Tue Feb 04, 2020 6:46 pm My wife and kids returned from China on January 27th and today, I have about all the symptoms of this virus. I went to CDC TK and they were testing and interviewing me and making a vdo or something. I objected and fortunately there was an American doctor there that schooled the Cambodians on confidentiality.

The American doctor wanted to send me to some Russian hospital but I would have to foot the bill so I declined. The test will be back tomorrow so I decided to self-isolate for tonight; the Cambodians were ok with that because I said I didn't want to pay for the ambulance or the room, not until I get the results. The American doctor was concerned that I would spread the virus or, since I have asthma and I'm 59, deteriorate quickly. He was trying to workout protocols for this situation but there are none. His view was that I should be forced to go to hospital and I agreed - but on the understanding that I don't pay. The Cambodian health workers said that isn't happening and its up to me.

Anyway, as a general principle, I don't think I should have to pay for treatment of a virus that is posing a global threat. I think nations should foot the bill for quarantine and not pass it on to potentially infected. This is a global epidemic and here I am walking around, potentially infected, and the Cambodian view is up to you." I have to ask all those talking shit about China, which response is better? I doubt the Chinese are charging for Corona virus quarantine and basic treatment - like some oxygen. I think China's response, and the US for that matter, is the way to go. Enforce quarantine but foot the bill.

Anyway I'm a bit nervous but the virus, according to the American doctor, is quite mild. The factors causing concern is my age and my asthma.
yes. noone should pay in foreign countries for healthcare or have insurance. What a bugger

If I thought I had the virus I would go to a hospital to get it checked out - for my sake, especially for the sake of my family, for the sake of my work colleagues and for the sake of everyone I came into contact with. As there is no free healthcare I would understand that I will have to pay. I wouldn't expect work, the state or anyone else to pay for my health.

How much is it going to cost?

A few hundred bucks to, possibly, save your own life and possibly prevent your own family getting infected - if indeed you do have it. Its not much. You probably own a phone that cost more. Health is surely the most important thing in life and that's why a person should be responsible for their own health. You, we, are the most important thing in our own lives.

Just go to the hospital if you are that concerned.

I should add if I definitely didn't think I had the virus and my place of work was demanding I go to hospital then I would expect them to pay. But it seems this isn't the case. You are worried and you think you might have it. Therefore it is your responsibility - to yourself, work and most importantly to your family - to go to hospital.

I am not undermining your paranoia about this, I would feel the same in these times, and I hope you don't have the virus and I wish you a speedy recovery.

All the best.

couple of points>
1. why not stay at the hospital of YOUR choosing, while you wait for the results, (which must be in by now, (as ur last post was 11:36 pm .Update)? Your risking infecting ur family at home and as they traveled from China, they should be tested as well.
2.I f you do have it, then you need get to the hospital and risk infecting others along the way
3. If i was thinking i might have it, the last thing on my mind would be "who pays", while the first would be,"help me"
4. I have also questioned ..who pays? what if i dont have insurance? what if i'm not working and have any coverage?
what if....this goes for anywhere. Say ur american and forced to fly back to America and are put in 14 day isolation...who Pays?
In a nation run by swine, all pigs are upward-mobile and the rest of us are fucked until we can put our acts together: not necessarily to win, but mainly to keep from losing completely. HST

More than anything, this report is a stark reminder that it's completely irresponsible to live in a country such as Cambodia as an expat without having adequate health insurance. The OP's main concern, faced with being infected with a potentially lethal virus, seems to be having to pay for the hospital.
