Resistance to the KR - untold stories

Have questions or resources regarding Khmer Culture? This forum is all about the Kingdom of Cambodia's culture. Khmer language, Cambodian weddings, French influence, Cambodian architecture, Cambodian politics, Khmer customs, etc? This is the place. Living in Cambodia can cause you to experience a whole new level of culture shock, so feel free to talk about all things related to the Khmer people, and their traditions. And if you want something in Khmer script translated into English, you will probably find what you need.

Maybe if anyone was in the resistance they’d keep it on the low down for fear of being ex KR by association, much like our beloved HE - who actually was ex KR and still gets labelled as such, or actual KR but changed his story.
If he can’t shake it off what hope do “normos” who were basic conscripts have?

Let sleeping dogs lie etc.

Some of the input here reminds me of the importance of doing some basic research before lighting yourself inside of a fiery ring of sophomoric beer blather. It was a lovely thread for a minute, our wisest and most dedicated senior statesmen added the gravitas that comes with facts. As for me I don't know that I would knee jerk, cheap shot from cheap seats, bleacher call out any prominent local person, EVER, no matter how right I thought I was. That is unless one chose to misrepresent oneself on this forum for the purpose of drawing out the rookies for a dance in the moonlight.

As JB touched on, the Issarak roots of what evolved into Democratic Kampuchea, or "KR", as Herr Mannanman has offered, the Issarak Movement is THE starting point for the entire political and philosophical ideology of all things that make up Democratic Kampuchea.
.
That being said, and not wanting to sound like a Democratic Kampuchea apologist but I know I do; the ensuing years which brought the world's superpowers to settle for a proxy war, those years, 1963-1973, would have made any independently formed leftist revolutionary army drastically change in light of the leftist's proximity to the main show. After 1973 I don't feel so in the know about stuff regardless of the reading I have done that I would take a shot from the waist like a liquored up redneck on a duck hunt about somebody who lived through it and maintained a firm notion of sovereignty that any proud Issarak would sign off on.

He is ethnic Thai from Koh Kong, and joined the Issaraks in the 1950s, eventually being part of the revolutionary movement in the 1970s. In 1974 Koh Kong was purged by Ta Mok's forces so he fled to Thailand with a few hundred followers. His band fought a campaign of resistance against the Khmer Rouge, and eventually in 1979 he traveled by boat to Vietnam and got involved in the Salvation Front. He wrote an autobiography which I had but somehow lost.

I had that copy, then a Scotsman borrowed it and when I asked him where it was; denied he had ever laid eyes on it

@SternAAlbifrons if you can get down to Canberra the National Library of Australia has a copy available in the Reading Room. I looked at getting a copy of the book but when I ticked the "high definition" box and then added 223 pages it came out to just over $12,000 so dare say if the opportunity is there after NSW and the ACT finish their lock down it might be worth it. Or see if the State Library of NSW can borrow it on your behalf so you don't have to travel.

@bossho
The title of this thread is “Resistance to the KR” hence why it’s mentioned, it being KR.

But carry on with your passive aggressive nonsense towards members.

Hey, Great! Thanks Kahuna.

I'm the kind of weirdo that would make the trip for this mysterious book.
I joined the State Library of NSW (archives) just about a month ago - they have a mind boggling collection of weird stuff too,
plus access, from memory ??, to the National library.
'Not really used it yet except for old newspapers. I'll let you know how i go.

John Bingham wrote: Wed Aug 18, 2021 9:24 pm I certainly wouldn't pay $50 for it even if it was a good read. I think it cost me $6, but it was a copy from a friend who just printed up 10 copies or something as the book was hard to find. As for the book by the Northern Europeans, it sounds familiar. If you can remember the title it would help. I might have it on PDF.
@John Bingham, I came across that book I was looking for and you seemed to recall, "Cambodians and their Doctors" and its just a downloadable .pdf as I see it on the Diva.org portal.

I happened to be searching for an entirely different subject, and have yet to find anything online about this one. Last night I heard a new version of this ancient practice and also I tried a new spelling. Can I PM you this subject that has eluded me and what I know of it? I'd bet you may have something to add and may even know about some written references to it. I have confirmed this subject's existence here by asking dozens of locals about it. I'd lay it out for the hoi polloi and ask everyone here but I don't think this one would be treated fairly or appreciated by our gentle readers. The title above that I ended up finding must have a reference to it as it came up in the query so I'll have a go at that book.

Monument Books is on Norodom just north of Independence Monument. I have been in the Aeon branch but it's not the main one.
