Reputation Ratios

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Reputation Ratios

Post by Ghostwriter »

In this growing trend to evaluate people (China, social medias and all), how come CEO doesn't put up a reward system based on the ratios beetween number of posts and reputation ?

After all, the extremes are to be banned for the worst posters, and nothing AFAIK about the bests.

In this vip-premium-exclusive-suscribe-and-be-part-of-the elite-correctness-policies-and-wank-the-dog-so-it-doesn't-bark era, i'm surprised you don't make a game of ranking with multiple awards about your posters, or something sarcasticly funny somehow, with beers to be drank somewhere on the CEO's tab. After all, there is advertising and posters. :stir:

I realised that by seiing that it's my 200e post, with a 100 reputation. Square numbers which gave me this thought.
I guess the king of the party would be KungFu Hillbilly anyway, monsieur must be an ex journalist or something.

As far as I know there was no like button for the first few years, and there was an unlike button for quite a while too, so it wouldn't really be accurate to divide it that way.

Of course a quantitative measure is only one indicator of outcomes. Ignore qualitative measures at your peril.

Perhaps a famous, classic example of this was Robert McNamara, the US Secretary of Defense during the Vietnam war who exclusively used body count measures to indicate the US was winning the war..

On a totally unrelated forum whose topic has nothing remotely to do with my semi-exile, a number of senior, very much the expert posters were noted for their prolific post counts and thumbs up. When looked at with a more critical eye, it became apparent that approaching 50% of that post count related to slapping someone else (figuratively speaking) on the back over an inane comment about an equally inane riposte to a dumb question by someone whose post count indicated they really should know better.

Thus, in the Facebook age where the word ‘friend’ more often than not means ‘I can barely stand to be in the same country as you’ or ‘who the feck are you? But I’ll add you anyway...’, the word expert can equally be applied to someone a sandwich short of a picnic, with little better to do in their spare time than bash away inanely at the keys, basking in their newfound glory, while adding nothing of substance.

Rather like this post, now.

Surely, the reward for being tolerated and not banned is to continue to be tolerated and not banned? Pushing the envelope of acceptability occasionally, and every now and then having to duck back behind the parapet.

However, if rewards are to be had, and honours given, I vote Explorer, for persisting with near heroic stoicism in the face of frequent dry humoured derision, while attempting to correct the masses (namely the rest of us).

50% of posts during a period when only upvotes were allowed. If you go back to old posts you'll notice none or very few have upvotes, because the function didn't exist. If you go back to some posters like BKKTrapper with his garbage posts, he might have even had a negative number for quite a while. Until you bring back the downvote button it will be nothing more than backslapping. Some of the members here would be in the negative hundreds or thousands if they brought back that function. Unfortunately the Moderators seem to support those who constantly disparage Cambodian people and society, and censor anyone who argues with them. It's no great surprise that this forum has next to no Cambodians contributing, as it is used as a mouthpiece for bigotry and hatred towards the people. Shame on you for letting this happen. 8-)

Nice ratio @Ghostwriter. I like CEO as it is, personally. Removing the downvote may have seemed like a Facebook move, but it really just stopped unnecessary competition among a somewhat insulated group of expats. I like it that CEO stays in the format of an oldschool net forum. Now, sarcastic awards? Yeah I'm down for that. :thumb:
