Reputation Ratios

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I didn't know down-votes existed until JB mentioned them. Oh if only they still did. Then you could have a simple algorithm to make banning decisions based on what the wider CEO community thought was inappropriate. Or would that encourage the mob-mentality more? Who knows??

I don't collect upvotes so i can have the wank of my life while staring at the stats, but i know it might keep some awake until late.

However, this forum ( Khmer 440 same same) are really well done. Sure, the average Khmer won't go here to catch informations and advices, but yeah sometime i wonder how useful is it to the most curious ones.
As for the expats, we know that there isn't an infinity of jobs and cool places to hang out, although there is more foreigners around PP SR and SHV looking for them. So, a bit of competition and catfights seems fair enough.
As for the tribes (the old sexpats, the old workpats, the young weirdos and the young entrepreneurs, the bunches from the same regions, the bunches from the same criminal backgrounds, the bunches with the same addictions, etc etc) of course all cannot mix well without lumps here and there, fair enough too.

I like it the way it is too, with stupid threads and clever threads, dickheads rants and connaisseur analysises, and the whole circus.

Sometimes i'm just wondering if it will be mostly all about commenting and spreading reflected images of one's self, as a growing routine in the future, or if something could also be created from here to serve higher purposes, like i hope the guy at the origin of the forum had in mind when starting it. I don't even know if he did to be frank. Entertaining bored to death people beetween two things to do is already a noble target, and an achievement at the end of the day.

But i don't see much concerted action, or group initiatives to interact with the locals, other than individual initiatives here and there.

So i noticed this post/reputation thing and then it got me wondering what else this forum could be if aimed at some other directions.

I am also a big fan of ranting, calling others bad names, and destructing unstable argumentations with pleasure (while the OP cries in front of his screen - so i hope). But i think there might be room and interest for other stuff. Unclear what yet, beccause i didn't read the whole forum posts and didn't make interactions cartography. Yet. :stir:

Hope i don't sound too boy-scout or circle of lost poets. I like battle royale too. And feces in the fan, topspeed. Otherwise i wouldn't be there.

I can only hope you wake up with a huge hangover this morning JB. Do you really believe those statements that you posted?

I, for one, don't believe either of your above statements.
This is, after all, an expat forum. It is probably of little interest to locals. Though I'm sure there are quite a few locals who do read ceo.
I'm also sure there must be several Khmer centric forums which have no expat members.

I guess the king of the party would be KungFu Hillbilly anyway, monsieur must be an ex journalist or something.
Ex junkie, not journo. Ah, the Cambodian nineties...Happy days.

The reputation system I believe is an effective way for newbies to gauge whether the advice given to them by individual members might have merrit or carry some weight, or have cred. Personally, I contribute in the manner I do because I am a voracious reader, I like the community, and want to share anything I think may be of interest to people - whether it be whores or history. For me, I could care less about rep points.

Yes I do believe them, and I was up fresh faced at 6 am. If you like to encourage that sort of abuse it's your call. Don't be too surprised if there is a backlash against your site from the authorities in the future.

Wow, I haven't seen John Bingham this hyperbolic in ages.

Maybe time to step away from CEO, bud...just so you don't get yourself caught up in our descent into hellfire.

TOF could use a little injection of vibrancy anyway, that I'm sure you'd fit the bill for. So go ahead and poor your energies that way, if this is all so distasteful to you :thumb:

Heading: The People You Most Want To Avoid In SE Asia (and sometimes everywhere else too)
John Bingham wrote: Fri Nov 08, 2019 8:48 pm I barely ever encounter characters like that anymore. I rarely go to bars so that helps. When I do it's usually to meet old friends from out of town or here, so I wouldn't be getting into conversations with random dudes if I can help it. The friends and people I know here are nothing like any of those stereotypes, not saying they are angels but they are in the main part successful and have had long careers spanning many places (I'm not including myself in that group, I'm a basketcase but not doing too badly!).
So you avoid talking to people you don't know. You don't speak Khmer, so you can't talk to Cambodians unless they speak English. Yet you seem to think you know all about what is going on.

Some of us get a lot of information from people we talk to, both foreigners and Khmer.

Maybe you have been in Cambodia so long that it seems normal to you. Maybe you have forgotten what it is like back home.

There is one more possibility. You know a lot of what you say is not true, or you don't know and take a guess, but you just want to look important, and win the argument.

I suggest you just focus on making a positive contribution, and stop telling people they are wrong, when in many cases it is you that is wrong.

Maybe you can actually learn from the information people post on this forum.

Mods -

Can there be a section created just for those members who wish to insult, abuse each other, and have an endless ‘battle royale’?

Make it like darknet, invitation only. Invite all those unique members to a special place where they can duke it out, be as mean to each other as they want, etc. they can grind their axes and leave the rest of us out of it.

That way CEO can be more welcoming to others and grow.

At one time or another everyone will disagree with someone
some disagree more often

Use the IGNORE function..
