I wouldn’t guarantee anyone else could do it, just my experience.
You mean you renewed early without needing to show your home licence? Or you showed them an expired home licence and they didn't check the validity date properly? Also, I presume you had a reason to renew your Cambo licence 1 month early...coz I once I did it 2 weeks late and even read on here they will accept up to 1 month after expiry..altho I nevertheless wouldn't recommend it.

If you didn't have to show your home licence, maybe that's because you renewed very early before expiry?

Sorry, two different things. I renewed my license early and just showed my Cambodian license. Initially they said it was too early to renew, but I told them I wasn’t going to be able to get back to PP before it expired because of work. Correct, I did not show my home license. So, yes, I renewed early.
When I got pulled over by the cops, driving our Ssanyong ( normal share taxi, but ours isn’t) I grabbed my license from my pocket, it was expired, I had my new one (and a valid Cambodian one) but my expired us license was accepted. I got a receipt, and no fine, for “low air in rear tire”. The tire was fine, I had a bunch of crap in the car, had taken half of it out, and couldn’t be assed to move it all around. I was only going another 10km. It was a long day and I didn’t remember that the one I gave the was expired until I looked over the receipt.

N.B. I just got all of our vehicles inspected, they were much more strict this year. Problems that previously passed were flagged, with 1 month to fix and recheck for a pass. That didn’t stop me from having a mild stroke last night coming up on a truck with literally no lights whatsoever going 20kms in the middle of both lanes.
Unless you absolutely have to ( and unfortunately I often do) Never drive at night here.
up to you...

How I understand in the possesses of renewing the Cambodian license, is if you have one (you here because you are asking about renewing it) you only need to have that license, but you do realize the expired license occurs that of a daily charge until it is renewed.

I just cant believe that>
Surely once you have a khmer license you should be able to renew that one yearly?
I know plenty of expats here that ONLY have a thai license and have not had their home country license for decades.

Any links for that>?
Richard, I just went through the procedure. It's best to renew your home driver licence by mail if possible. Been here over 10 years, so can't renew my home license without a walk in procedure. I used to have the yearly license here way back in the day when it was much easier. I used to have a single one year license here over four years. Only had to show my home town driver license the first time. Doesn't matter. Would prefer the ten year anyway. It's just the exam and dealing with the procedure isn't fun. Then I remember, it's a pain in the arse in my hometown location also. It was 182,000 riel. I downloaded the drivers app. With the rules.... some interesting rules and it's worded a bit confusing. Good to review a few days.

couple of points
for California we can only renew twice by mail ( 5 years each) than you need show up
after 70 you always need show up
and i think in Cambodia ur not allowed a 10 year one if over 60-65>> of that i am not sure if thats pro rated or...... Can someone ask for sure?

ONLY reason to have a dl ( as the fines are so small) is IF ur involved in an accident, as i am sure no license...ur fault automatically and insurance wont cover you

I am sure there many expats living overseas that do not return home....and not for something as a drivers license.

Thanks all

You can’t get insurance without a Cambodian licence.
IIRC you can get a 5 year licence at 60yo and then renew every year.

Andy, did you find this out? When I come back I will have an expired license. I won’t have a landlord

I want a license I can use during my visits.

Added expense to get it done is not a barrier
It’s 500 reil a day fine for each day your license has expired.

Clemen, our car is due for inspection next month.

Any tips or bits of wisdom to impart on the process of having it done?

What was the cost and is it still being done at the facility waaaaaay out in the North-West part of town?

As long as tyres are good, lights work and no bits of metal hanging off it’s easy. It’s not like a roadworthy in any western country (unless you’re from South Australia where they don’t have one).

Years ago my brakes failed the test on the rolling road. $1 to the guy fixed that. Pretty scary! (Yes I got them fixed)
