Relocation Expenses etc...

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. I think the OP should go hog wild and splurge for a refrigerator.
Are sure about this, I agree that Cambodians and most Asian leave meat out ,but never for 2 or 3 days ,what food do they leave on the counter for 3 days ,I want to avoid that!
If you said for a day ,I would be like okay, but 3.

Who else has seen 3 day old food, unless it is a dish that improves in flavour with age, cheese for example in the west.
in the provinces they hang some meat out and dry it out in the sun, fish for example, ive eaten fish that has been hung up and dried over the coarse of a couple of days, its the oldest way of preserving meat as drying it out gets rid of all the water in it which the micro organisms can grow in, dried meat can be preserved for years and still be edible
Fish are preserved through such traditional methods as drying, smoking and salting. The oldest traditional way of preserving fish was to let the wind and sun dry it. Drying food is the world's oldest known preservation method, and dried fish has a storage life of several years. The method is cheap and effective in suitable climates; the work can be done by the fisherman and family, and the resulting product is easily transported to market.

Somewhat wrong. No way will local dried fish here stay good for years. A few weeks or months at most, even less for local beef jerky, which even the sellers say you should bbq before eating (not just for the taste, but to kill any bacteria that might be there).
why is it wrong? i said i ate it after it had been dried out for a few days, i just stated dried meat can stay preserved for years with source to back it up, why would the cambodians leave their dried fish out for years? they would just eat it

It's a fantastic diet plan :) I've lost a ton of weight - it's like Foodie Russian Roulette - eat and eat and eat until you get sick then puke everything up you've ever eaten, then repeat.
Great success :)

I'd like to see the one that costs 100 probably just about fits a mars bar. $400 is right in the Kingdom of Wonder, and so is double on nearly all prices. Only fools don't accept it as being so. You'd be surprised how greedy these shopkeepers are Gayvine.

I00 to 200 for a good second-hand one. If you trust the shop keeper. Remember electricity is one of the most expensive in the world here, plus virtually all landlords double it or more. So the second hand shops love to dump the shit fridges on unsuspecting customers, as do a lot of the expats. Allow around 30-40 bucks a month for just your small fridge.
i have a big fridge freezer and im getting charged 1500khw and my electric bill this month was $7.5 mainly due to the amount of aircon usage ive had this month, its usually only $4 per month
Now I know you got hit too hard in that last fight. WTF! surely you mean 17.50 and 40? I guess your room is a tiny box and you never open the fridge. But even then....
Nope Seven Dollars Fifty - $7.50 is my electric bill this month, and the past 2 months its been Four Dollars - $4 & Three Dollars - $3

and no i dont live in a tiny box at all...
here is my fridge/kitchen...

Looks like you have gone native then and have wired yourself into the neighbors supply. Honestly Jamie @ 1500 KlW it just isn't possible at the prices you supplied For the fridge alone maybe if you unplug it a lot. For AC on a couple of hours per day. Never.

I meant the part about it lasting for years in this humid climate. I highly doubt that. Of course if dried in an industrial setting (or a food dehydrator) and packaged properly, it could probably last for a very long time. Can't say I'm an expert, but locals did tell me not to keep the jerky for a long time and if they tell me that, it means it probably does go bad early on. Fish lasts longer I think, not sure why. Leaner meat I guess?

Fair enough, I haven't bought a fridge in maybe 7 years, I remember the last one I bought was $200 and pretty big, but crap and ended up sold to a recycler for $5 a few years later. The fridge I have now I bought with other house contents so have no idea what it cost.

Anyway, your electricity bill seems ridiculously high, while Jamie Lambo's is crazy low. Mine is around $35 a month all year round for years, I can read the meter and have always been able to see the bill . I don't have air-con though. That's probably a lot for the computer/console/washing machine/TV/lights and fridge I'm running though. I should probably check how much juice the fridge is using, a crap one can bleed power like crazy.
