I got stopped for no helmet ,and they refused to take the payment at the roadside and gave me a ticket that I have to pay later at the local police station. I offered $5 but they wouldn't take it, the fine is 15,000 reil ! how crazy it that?

If the BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) levels are the same across the board, I would assume the German would have died, blowing a .89 on the breathalyzer.

There is a difference between BLOOD alcohol content and BREATH alcohol content.
BLOOD is double BREATH with the decimal place moved.
The way to remember the law is 40 BREATH or 80 BLOOD.
That guy had a BREATH level of 0.89. Just lose the "0." and you get 89 so more than double the limit.
As to knowing where to move the decimal point nobody is going to blow 890 (you would probably be dead) and 8.9 is less than 1 beer so you would know you had no problems there.

Also there are two levels here - the lower one is half of the above i.e. 20 BREATH / 40 BLOOD where, if I read the law correctly, they can stop you driving and confiscate your vehicle until you are sober although I haven't heard of this being done.

Gav says 0.05 BLOOD level in Aus so I would call that 50 BLOOD which is 25 BREATH, so a little over half of what it is here

So that means - (by all means correct me if I am wrong), it is .08 BAC (Blood Alcohol Content) - so that is 3 heavy beers for me at 165 pounds.... which would be right on the legal limit in Cambodia.....

Australia - that is 2 heavy beers in an hour I guess...

In the UK & Ireland when I was there - they would never pull up a person unless they had "reasonable suspicion" to think that someone was "under the influence...."

Mind you - "reasonable suspicion" is pretty vague to say the least...... try and fight that in court!

I had a massive prang in Thailand (Phuket) many years ago, (I was not pissed), but wrote my old mans car off in the early evening - saved a female friend from going through the windshield when the vehicle hit a concrete pylon. I was in the right -- BUT-- the police started their negotiations at $3K ----- gradually whittled them down to $500 bucks - ----- very lucky --- I never hit or killed anyone -- I only wrote off the car because a motorcyclist went through a red light in an 80klm zone where they were doing roadworks - I tapped the brakes to prevent hitting the motorcyclist and so I spun out of control; there was gravel on the bitumen at an intersection where I had the green light - The motorcyclist went through the red, my vehicle just slid and spun out of control - admittedly I was a lot younger..... that was a nightmare as well as an eye opener... I nearly took the motorcyclist out, his tail lights disappeared underneath the bonnet/hood visibility from where I could see in the drivers seat..... He never stopped..kept going..... glad I didn't hit him, but I was in the shit.... never again.... that was a C##T of a year!! lol

That did happen to me once, the only time, I think it cost me about 1000 baht (obviously in Thailand) - I am not sure if that was because that was everything I had in my wallet or that was the 'going rate' so to speak....

Gav, you sound a bit stressed -just to put things in perspective - SV is a small town compared to Brisbane (and most Thai cities too) - so you can't really compare - there's not much traffic in SV and there's one main drag that goes through the town (where the cops stop you mostly.) After you stay awhile, you recognize some of the cops and they know you too if they stop you enough. It's a really small town. But being stopped by the cops is "normal" here - not like Oz where you can go to jail, or the US where they shoot you. If you're stopped then just have a chat and be "normal" - if you've been bad then pay up, if not, smile a lot and ask for a receipt or shoot the shit.

its very easy to avoid the coppers here if you know the side streets you can stay off the main road, but its really not as bad as people make out, some people claim to be pulled over 5 times in 1 day but ive only been pulled a few times this year, and if you got your shit together you got nothing to worry about even if they do
