I lived in Thailand for a few years, and have only been pulled over once, the second time wasn't so much as getting pulled over but the police being present at a traffic 'incident'......

My old man has been there 30 years, I am pretty sure he would be hard pressed to recall the last time he was pulled over... (in Phuket)...

Just curious.
not really ive only been pulled over 3 times this year, if you count the percentage of amount of times ive drove past police (inc ones standing in the middle of the road waving people over) and the amount of times ive actually been pulled over, this year it would come to about 2%, i usually never get hassled, and out of the 3 times i have been pulled ive left without paying fines, the first was a general stop the other 2 mentioned above

last year i got pulled maybe 8 times, 2 of them times were for legit reasons, lights on, no helmet, to which i paid 5000r and $2, the other times were just random stops/licence checks,

they pick on khmers just as much as barangs and also i see a lot more cars being pulled now,
they do seem to be more keen to pull people over here than in thailand, but most of the time its just them taking their chances, if youve got your shit together then theyre just a nuisance that waste a few minutes of your time,
its the stupid expats and tourists that keep feeding them tea money that keeps them keen, this new ticket system was supposed to be stopping the bribes, but that doesnt seem to be the case here in SHV thats one reason i started this thread, if anything the new ticket system gives the persons the right to refuse to pay the bribe, everything needs to be kept civil though as you dont want them to feel like they losing face,
the police are only interested in the people that are clueless/easily intimidated

Thanks Jamie,

Yes still, that is quite a high incident/pull over rate - 3 times this year.....

I not really comparing as such, but even so, in Brissy I been pulled over twice in maybe 3 years...... I am soon to come over/relocate - I just have a lot of legal stuff I am finalizing...

Just out of curiosity --- if -- "hypothetically speaking" you were to be pulled up DUI, what would the 'going rate' be?? If that was to happen?

That did happen to me once, the only time, I think it cost me about 1000 baht (obviously in Thailand) - I am not sure if that was because that was everything I had in my wallet or that was the 'going rate' so to speak....

I have never really had a run-in with police to be honest.

tbh though 2 of those times they had reason, especially the one where i ran a red light, so they was withing their right, but i got let off both times so cant grumble too much,
the only people that really moan are the tourists/expats that are clueless to the laws and/or cost of the fines they should be paying,
ive seen people quoting on facebook that they were paying $20-$50 bribes (in order to get out of a 5000-10,000r fine) i even saw one guy saying he paid $100, its no wonder they pull people over!
the fines have now gone up to 15,000r ($3.75), ive had them quoting me 25,000 ($6.25) to which i just refused to pay, i demanded one (when i knowingly ran the red light) to write me a ticket, he kept asking me how much i would pay him now, i said nothing, he just waved me on,

DUI in Thailand some new strict laws have come in apparently where you get something like a 20,000 baht fine + 1 month in prison for DUI,
not completely sure what the penalties have been in here in Cambodia, as i dont know anyone that has been pulled and failed a breathalyzer here yet, i know one guy got pulled over on his bike, they asked him to blow into the breathalyzer but he demanded a new mouth piece to which they refused, the then said he wasnt going to do it unless they gave him a new mouth piece, again they just waved him on

Only in Sihanoukville... I haven't been pulled over in about 4 years anywhere. I've also driven to Sihanoukville several times in that time frame. They're more aggressive there, but I never get pulled over in the big city.

$3.75.... OMG....... what a great country!!

I am already trying to count down the days to get out of here, I already feel like I am living there in some respects - the mind is there - the body isn't!!

In all honesty - imagine trying to pay a western copper $3.75 for not wearing a helmet? Your bike would be sitting on the side of the road until you organized a tow (?), the fine would be somewhat extravagant, lose points off your licence.....maybe taken back to the police station..... and just a general nightmare....

not that I am condoning any driving behavior particularly, each to their own.....

I mean, by all means pay the price, but I don't agree with being financially raped over a mediocre traffic infringement.....

The DUI (blowing 40 or more) according to the new law is a $250-$1000 fine and the possibility of 1-6 months in jail. There was an announcement about a month ago that 1st timers would only have to pay a $100 on the spot fine.

Oh ok, Thanks Lurcio,

No, I must have missed that new law.

I am not sure what "40" is exactly? In Aus (at least anyway) we go by BAC, which is Blood Alcohol Content - basically a percentage... BAC here the limit is 0.05 - anything over - you end up in court..... fines etc. I know some countries have 0.08.....
