Reason for staying in guest houses

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Reason for staying in guest houses

Post by atst »

The thought of sleep in a six bunk room with total strangers sharing bathroom with don't know how many to save a couple dollars a night has never appealed to me , what do you do when you meet a friend for the night?
Can someone please enlighten me on the attraction and what I'm missing

Guest houses are normally individual rooms.

Your talking about backpacker hostels.

Some people stay in dorm rooms because they have very little money. They can save a tiny bit.

In one case, I suspect certain people stayed in dorms so they could steal from other foreigners.

And sometimes a bad way. Many many years ago a friend was going up to Bunderberg for a couple of days and asked if I wanted to go with him , rather than him traveling alone. We stayed at a backpackers ,,, his choice, as he was short of cash and looking for work.
There were 8 bunk beds in the room and I chose a top one and he was on the bottom. As he was still getting over a broken ankle problem from many months before he was taking sleeping tablets etc to help him sleep. We were both sleeping when sometime after midnight others that were occupying the other beds arrived after a heavy night of booze and partying.
Apparently one girl was so drunk she could not find her bed so she just climbed in with my friend. He never knew until he woke up in the morning and when he saw her face for the first time, he said he was glad he had slept through the whole night.
Cambodia,,,, Don't fall in love with her.
Like the spoilt child she is, she will not be happy till she destroys herself from within and breaks your heart.

I don't know why anyone does it here when you can get a room with a fan, tv and (cold) shower for $7.
