Questions for the leavers

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Here's one example.

International Bridges to Justice provides access to high quality free legal aid services to the poorest of the poor in 20 provinces and in the Court of Appeal. Through early access to counsel, IBJ eliminates instances of torture or other inhumane treatment.
IBJ conducts rights awareness campaigns to inform individuals of their legal rights and encourage them to claim these rights.
IBJ runs radio rights awareness programs to explain to individuals their legal rights to counsel, to a fair trial, and to be free from torture, and advising them on where to seek legal aid services.

IBJ Country Facts

Working on the ground in Cambodia since 2001.
First Defender Resource Center established in 2006.
9 Defender Resource Centers currently providing legal protection across 22 out of 25 provinces.
Over 7,000 cases handled.
Over 14,000 people reached in 276 Community Legal Awareness events (CLAs)
Over 1,800 detainees reached in 72 Prison Legal Awareness events (PLAs)
48 roundtable discussions with over 1,128 participants.
32 radio rights awareness campaigns reaching out to millions of Cambodians.
23 defender/justice-sector decision-maker joint trainings, with over 900 participants.

Here's another:
Program on Rights and Justice in Cambodia (PRAJ)

Building upon the success of its six-year predecessor, the Program on Rights and Justice in Cambodia (PRAJ), EWMI continues to promote access to justice, improve the professional standards of the future Cambodian legal community, and strengthen grassroots advocacy and community networks, including community-based advocacy to protect Cambodia's biodiversity. New initiatives under EWMI's program include activities to improve the collection and use of justice system data and the creation of a new open data platform to promote transparency in Cambodia's resource development.

I found that food was a hell of a lot cheaper and Derby's pretty much a third world country so blending in wasn't too hard. There's mountains of shit and nobody speaks English. You can get a nice steak in Aldi for about 4 quid and the food doesn't constantly give you the shits, as long as you avoid the dodgy kebab/chicken shops. You can get two pizzas and two sides for £20. I've decided to stick my daughter into a real school, I'm kicking my kids out when they hit 18 so they better have some skills. It costs a grand English for a fucking passport now they've gone nuts on them. So I'm back for a while. It's no biggie, I've lived in quite a few varied countries so moving's no skin off my nose. The wife's not keen on coming, she can stay here and sort her shit out. I've got ten years to go before I can retire.

I know flb (we met a few times in Kampot), and understand general mack left a few years ago, lambo spends a lot of time in other places (sorry, others must do too, but these are the public faces of those who leave).

I don't have to go now, but do feel the writing is on the wall. Just want to hear from those who already made the jump.

i only spend 4-5 months of the year in other places (Thailand/England) rest of the time im in Cambodia

lived here in 2008/09, (first visit was back in 1988), enjoyed it immensely, but knew that Living in thailand offered so much more.
Over the past 10 years have returned many times, acquired a khmer gf an she lives with me in Thailand, even she prefers it there...

Funny, whenever we are here she has to remind me to lock the car, ( in thailand, I never take the keys out of it)
tells me,"its Cambodia, not like Thailand"

NOW with the Chinese invasion, i wonder how many more will depart
I admire you all that remain here, it does not seem, ( in my eyes), to be getting easier to stay or better or less expensive, ( considering it is a 3rd world country).
I think you have very nice combination living in Thailand having Khmer GF. I never had Khmer gf they look smoking hot though. One question: Does the attitude of the Khmer GF changes if she lives in Cambodia vs. If she lives in Thailand.

Well simple choice for me. I live on the 8% interest I get from the bank and don't work. Money still goes a long way here and I think i would have to earn at least £30k at home to have the same lifestyle I have here unemployed.
There is also the minor fact that the west is falling apart. The Tory Taliban are destroying the Uk and hoping to take Europe with them, Trump is attacking his allies and cozying up to Russia. Putin is no doubt working on his plan to Annex the east European states once nato breaks up, and trade wars are going to put an end to peace. Going home is a bit like jumping out of the frying pan into the fire

8% per annum, which bank, fixed deposit and in Riel or USD? - I need to do the same sort of thing.

Cheers.

Wasn't AMK one of the ones with an actual licence and a decent rate of return? Microfinance so it's a bit risky, hence the return. If you keep it as Riel you get a decent return on 12-24 fixed term months at most banks, have a look round.

Now, the good news: Your wife and kids gonna love it here. For them it's exotic and full of adventures. And shiny new things. If your wife is like a typical Khmer "wife material" kind of girl, she won't have any problems to adapt. As soon as I turn my back on her, she's already chatting someone up. People are friendly and get this big smile on their faces. It's like they're thinking: Thank God, not another Muslima we have to feed!
As soon as the permanent visa is sorted, she already has numerous job offers.

If your wife is a kind of long leg knock off kind of girl, she's going to love it even more. And you better be carefull. Plenty of lonely men with big wallets around here. And big fat unmountiable white chicks. Can't blame them. But your hottie might kick you out. Because here's the bad news: You.

Your former "carrier" in shambles, no network, you find yourself on the dole, drinking cheap redwine and watching daytime TV. Where did those 11 years go? Well, up the hill we go again. With a little bit of luck we might come back again. When the kids finish highschool. That's in about 10 years. <sight>

Just might be the best post on the net!
