I've always been interested in propaganda art, I guess collecting stamps as a kid got me into it. I've tried to find the earliest recorded example, but I only came up with a lion-hunt frieze depicting an Assyrian king, there might be something earlier.

The Nazis were very good at their propaganda, I've included a sample of their bottom-of-the-barrel anti-semitic stuff, and then a Chinese one. The thread is purely to discuss the merits/demerits of teh art, not a discussion of whether the system was corrupt. I guess if you have to advertise it, it's corrupt already.

Seriously, I'm also a fan of WW2 propaganda. I have a few posters back at my parents home (reprints). Had a class where we analyzed DPRK propaganda in university. Interesting stuff.

Going on the early propaganda art theme.

Around the time of Darius I, the place of Persepolis.

One of the most influential propaganda "moves" in my opinion, the face on the coin by Alexander the Great.

A personal favorite, Emperor Augustus.

I don't know of anything definitely earlier than the murals of Asherbanipal though.
