I read some excerpts from her book and some other materials she has written. I was impressed with her experience-based and fairly clearheaded approach vis a vis both girls, their families and barangs. Particularly with the way she debunks the Calvinist "sex slave" myth put about by your standard NGO.
I have a friend in this biz. She is quite ambitions to learn Gringo Lingo, a bunch of which she has mastered, and to prosper in general. I note Hoefinger's mention of the "Women’s Network for Unity" [see the quote at bottom below]. I was unable to find hide nor hair of that NGO excerpt some very minimal and very outdated web postings. I contacted her by email and, though courteous, she was unable to give any useful info regarding that NGO or any other source whatever for assistance for bar girls, educational or otherwise.
i have spoken to a number of girls and others involved in bars and no one has ever heard of Women’s Network for Unity or any organization like it, formal or informal, ever.
"But the sex and entertainment workers themselves – many of whom, but not all –are involved in a sex worker union in Cambodia that has about 6,000 members, called the Women’s Network for Unity."

If you can find me one bargirl or indeed any practitioner of the boom boom arts who has received any help or contact from this NGO or its affitiates or has even recently heard of them I will wash your privates in Baileys.

Lol. It could have been a Tefler if he had just arrived. However, after working hard for 3 years he would have spent all his savings and have had to sell his Iphone in order to survive . The rewards of full time work in Cambodia. That's why everyone learns to steal. $500,000 cars don't grow on trees you know (they just end up in them after a good night out), and one certainly doesn't get to afford one in Cambodia by working hard.Samouth wrote:How did you find out that? Iphone 6+ is on the way now. One thing i can guarantee is that it was not given by a TEFLer.juansweetpotato wrote:No, I expect the learned professor thinks you got one from a male westernerSamouth wrote:By the way, i also have a smart phone. I wonder if he thought that i was given by a female westerner lol
Also, mosts girls/ boys , who have been in the trade a while, don't want a foreign boyfriend that lives here as it's harder for them to hide the other ones. Better to get someone living in a country with a good economy, as it means they have more cash to send each month and it makes it much easier to manage the other 9. Things start to get ugly if they spot each other . Of course there is always the rich, old, retired divorcée who has just sold their house and is on a good pension.Etc. Ooops , I'm starting to sound like a Hofingerer...

I think anything useful as far as helping prostitutes stay healthy etc was disbanded around the time the anti trafficking laws were introduced. I seem to remember around that time the USA made it a condition that it would put a hold on all US aid if it found out that some of it was going towards prostitution. Before that there were free services run to promote a healthier life for prostitutes and, by proxy, a large amount of the population.Otis wrote:I read some excerpts from her book and some other materials she has written. Perhaps that HIV outbreak in Battambang may have been prevented if those free health checks were still around.

My contact informs that there are in fact NGO staff that come around to the bars and talk in a very friendly way to the girls and provide STD blood tests and further referrals to low cost medical services for problems such as vaginal infections and other discomforts. These NGO's are not mainly funded by US sources and not subject to any of the limits you mention.
My anger is directed at Hoefinger because there is in fact no bar girl association or union and no NGO that helps bargirls who want to learn English or do other stuff that is useful. Hoefinger falsely asserts that there is in a current interview with VOA. This is a lie, pure and simple.
