Most of the places I have lived have a front door that you can lock, and then a metal gate that you can padlock, both outside and inside. The lock goes on the outside when you leave, and the inside when you are home, or when you go to bed at night.

It occurred to me how easily someone could contain a person by simply slipping a padlock on the outside of the gate, while the people were inside. It could be done for a host of reasons (use your imagination) but one that comes to mind is if they want to steal your moto or other outside things, they could immobilize you by locking you inside first. It could proceed to more nefarious reasons from there.

The thought always alarmed me a bit.

I once imprisoned myself, and when I was locked inside my own house and it made me realize how, these houses are equally effective at keeping people inside as out.

I was in the habit of double locking myself into my air-con bedroom, so my keys would rest conveniently inside the door lock, inside the bedroom. One day, on the way to the kitchen, when I closed the bedroom door the lock tripped for some strange reason. I was locked out of the bedroom, where my keys were and my cell phone etc, and now I couldn't exit the front door either.

No problem I thought. I can just go out the window, but, nope, I have security bars designed to keep people from coming inside. (granted, I also discovered the welds were not very well done, and in a pinch I think I could have busted them up pretty good)

Well, that house was fucking hot inside, the heat radiated from the ceiling, and the refrigerator working double time, and there was no natural shade cover outside over the roof. It would have been easy to panic as I sat there for some moments pondering my options.

The front door was actually open (outward opening), and the metal gate was on the inside of this house. So, I got a couple of pans, and went to the front and started clanging them to make a racket outside the house to draw some attention. The landlords young son came over, and they opened the door. Step one solved.

They tried to open the bedroom door, but their key wouldn't work because mine was inside the lock on the other side as I have said. They tried to unscrew the hardware, that too didn't work. Thankfully, the bedroom window was not locked and the landlord was able to use his bamboo pole to pull my keys out of the lock, after some tries. (why have these locks which require a key on each side, instead of just a lever on the inside?)

I think they thought I was awfully weird, and I wondered what they thought about how I ever got into that predicament. I am just thankful I was dressed and didn't have anything embarrassing playing on the television in the bedroom, haha.

Haha. I did have a period of concern about this, but decided it was an irrational concern unless I have enemies. Very easy to do.
