Predictions for weekend

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Predictions for weekend

Post by table42 »

As readers must know this weekend Kim Ley's body will be in a motorized cortege of perhaps thousands of mourners. For those who have lived in Cambodia for a long time it is easy to become inured to the threat of political violence, but at the same time the movement of tanks from Preah Viheah does not augur well, especially with the recent rapid deterioration of communication between political parties. So, what is your take? What is likely to happen this weekend?

my GF remarked how quiet it is in town and how that is a sign that something would happen.
people are not talking about it to casual acquaintances it seems.
what say the wives and girlfriends of you all?

Someone quite close to me is afraid a band of thugs will be hired to create conditions that can be blamed on the mourners or opposition party.
I hope Hanno is right but I feel it is a very, very rocky road to elections.u

i think the quietude observed by my girl, and her opinion that no one is talking about it does indeed mean something is afoot of a serious nature.
the lack of gossip is highly unusual and there was a big crowd at the pagoda for many days.
i live about 500 meters from the pagoda where it starts sunday
if i hear any rumpus, i will post it up here

It'd be nice to hear from the usual Khmer voices on this topic.

Probably the wrong day to mingle with the locals.
