Potato news

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

What's the "normal" rate, out of curiosity?

How long's a piece of string?
Khmer market price 1800 - 2500r depending on whether first or second quality.
Barang market price anywhere from 3000 - 6000r. Normally 5000r.
Lucky SM price atm 6500r/ $1.60.
Thai Hout atm 7300r/ $1.80.
Bayon atm 20,000r/ $5. I think they're normally around the $3 mark.

The clever boratey have a potato lady - someone who cleans the house and buys the spuds.

Those are bought with American NGO money. They sold quite a few, but I noticed a lot on discount after the event.

Ah, sorry, I completely missed your sarcasm! I to fuck all grocery shopping, so no idea what the price was, but $5 sounded like more than I'd guess.

I don't cook. A co-worker saw me microwave an egg for lunch last week, and told me in his 50+ years on this planet, he'd never seen anyone microwave an egg to cook it, LoL. That's the kind of stuff I do to avoid cooking.

Understood, I'll gve you a clue.1kg is around 10 smallish sized potatoes.
Sarcasm is my only defence against most prices in the KOW.

I think the ones in PP used to be from Vietnam, but are increasingly imported from China. Definately not first quality in the supermarkets here, more like third or fourth quality most of the time. God knows what they've been grown with. The eggs are a worry as well. If the Dutch are doing it, with all the EU regulations and monitoring, chances are China and Cambodia will be doing it too.

At least Bayon sells vodka for $4.50 - it's $5.50 at Lucky and they drip-feed it onto the shelves. They will put two bottles out, and after they sell those it takes them a week to restock.. with two more bottles... I guess it's just a strategy to sell the more expensive brands.
