"Possessed" Woman at Pagoda Gives Birth to a Platinum Ring

Post by General Mackevili »

LoL, I don't know what to think about this. If the husband was mystified by this, clearly he hasn't been to a pingpong show in Bangkok.

Kompong Chhnang province authorities Sunday ordered a 43-year-old woman claiming to be possessed by the spirit of a goddess to leave a pagoda in Boribor district where she has been collecting money from people who have come to see a platinum ring she supposedly gave birth to.

Chea Ith and her husband Bou Run, 50, first came to the Domrey Kon pagoda in Anh Chanh Roung commune on October 8, where they say Ms. Ith—possessed by the spirit of the goddess Preah Neang Kong Siim—gave birth to a platinum ring and produced a second, white ring from her torso, district governor Khuon Sarom said Sunday.

Ms. Ith also brought a chicken egg that she claims appeared magically inside her cow pen in July, Mr. Sarom said.

“We ordered the woman to leave the pagoda today, but she asked to stay for one more day because she told us that she wanted more people to come and look at the rings and the egg,” he said, adding that authorities would honor Ms. Ith’s request.

Mr. Sarom said that rumors of the woman’s divine nature drew as many as 100 people to the pagoda per day for the first few days she was there, but that this number dwindled as skepticism about her claims mounted.

Mr. Run on Sunday defended the validity of his wife’s assertions, saying that on the morning of October 8, she spontaneously burst into tears and asked him to arrange for her to be brought to the pagoda, where she gave birth to the platinum ring at about 3 p.m. and expelled the white ring from the right side of her rib cage shortly afterward.

“My wife was not pregnant, but she delivered two rings at the pagoda in the afternoon,” he said. “Laypeople in the pagoda also saw my wife deliver the two rings.”

Mr. Run added that on each of the first four days the couple stayed at the pagoda, they netted between 50,000 and 60,000 riel, or about $12.50 to $15, from people paying their respects to the goddess.

“We did not force those people to pay. The visitors did so voluntarily,” Mr. Run said.

Commune chief Khlong Varth said Ms. Ith was nothing more than a scam artist.

“This woman is lying to make money.....

I knew a guy who brought an LED light used to treat skin infections to cambo.
he had to literally run away from the crowds that arrived for the magic he had.
the locals thought he was some famous guy reincarnated.
he was giving the magic free too!

There's an NGO mob working in India that has a strategy I admire - they duplicate all the 'magic' tricks performed by shamans including the magic coconut, suspension on fish hooks, 'healings' etc., and then carefully show the villagers how the tricks are performed. Superstition meets education, the scam dies.

seems like the Khmer equal to selling snake oil or copper arthritis gloves on TV. But SOoooOo much easier. She's an entrepreneur! It's interesting this is not worse and more prevalent considering the great numbers of gullible ppl.
pssst, I got a bridge for sale, it's magical too.

Cambodians call "platine" 18 carat gold
Gold is only for pure gold objects in 99% form or 24 carat.

Colors being differents, no need for madame belly stamp.

They also have lower karats than 18 (.750) are they all "platin" ? - i couldn't quite work out the actual nomenclature but it seemed to be
.750 = platin = 18kt
.500= 12kt
.375 = 9 kt
they call the last two "meas barang" - that is barang gold, basically they think it is shit and don't use it, but smiths can make it for you.

fine gold is "Tuk Dorp Meas" ("meas" means gold in Khmer; "tuk dorp" or "water from the bottle," simply means it has been tested for purity) and is pure gold (99.99%)" from https://cambodiatravel.southeastasiatrav ... bodia.html

the "water" referenced here is nitric acid used for streak testing on a slate. AKA acid test.

gold i've seen there is an odd coppery color. I was told by someone they like to mix platinum and gold. Tho I've just read they add in a bit of bronze. Dunno but it don't look like the gold I usually see. After reading up on platinum I find it VERY odd the lady in the topic chose to say it was that. Seems it would be kinda rare in Cambodia. How would any local know it from silver?
