I prefer billiards (carom, bi da) . It's more cerebral.

In my experience they are very good at letting you win without you noticing what's going on. As long as you keep buying them drinks they will continue to subtly massage your male 'I'm a winner' ego.

Offer them a $10 prize if they can beat you and you'll see what they're really capable of.

This is especially true of the beer/pool bars in Pattaya.

I agree, the girls are exceptional at massaging bigging us up! I never buy a girl a drink unless she beats me, but I always give a dollar tip. When there is money involved they become very competitive and there at lot of gameswomanship (to coin a word) comes in to it. I've never played pool in Pattaya but I've heard the bar girls are more ruthless at and on the table.

I have played for 10$ prize money with a particular girl, but that was in my cringy girl-friend-experience phase...

I only play if we bet, usually something like 5 or 10 if they win, and if I win, they have to run around the block naked.

Whatever is agreed, I say we play 3 games (prize each time). I let them win the first (can be difficult sometimes, others, it is deserved, and I have to put on my game face). These two statements are repeated. They get grumpy or sad. The latter always get the money out of me, because, in fairness, I knew the outcome before we started.

I try to be clever, when I should remember whose territory I'm in.
That's an interesting strategy. I'll try that! It would be a novel experience to get money from, or even to suggest you might get money from, a bar girl!

It's a you win I lose situation but you are just paying them for their time a great way to hang out with those with limited English if you are bad at Connect-4.

That's absolutely true. I've only seen it played once in a club I used to go to. Everything goes back to billiards. Snooker too has a lot skill on a 12 ft table and can take time. 9-ball is fast and exciting, but 8-ball pool is more of a chess game... but compared to billiards it is more like draughts (USA: checkers)

American v English (Aussie etc) pool as played in own country compared to Phnom Penh (bar-girl) pool

I know there are no definitive rules anywhere in the world, and it depends on the country, region, town, bar etc, what you do with your balls, as long as you do it with the consent of your opponent.

Just for fun here are my observations. Anyone else noticed any peculiar or interesting variations?

US/ UK/ PP/
solid and stripe/ red and yellow/ tom and toot/
8-ball and 9 and 10-ball/ 8-ball/ 8-ball/
ball in hand for foul/ two shots for foul/ 'pick up' or two shots for foul/
ball in hand for scratch/ play two shots behind line/ play two shots behind line or place ball anywhere for one shot/
nominate pocket for black/ play black in any pocket/ nominate pocket for black/
strike with cue tip only/ strike with cue tip only/ may use butt end instead of rack/
stand respectful distance from opponent/ stand respectful distance from opponent/ may press butt and rack against pocket especially on 'money ball'/

sorry this is a mess, I can't work out how to put it in a table

I am well aware that I'm a grumpy old man so I try to keep it inside, but I just don't like it when other s lean on the table all around it when they're not playing.

That's true, as you get on in life you have to just accept the way it is.

Have you ever tried to play doubles? It's frustrating and chaotic. Some of them go missing, others take their turn and you don't know what is going on. Some have to be wrenched off their phones.
