As darkness fell last night outside the walls of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the former Khmer Rouge torture facility from which an estimated 14,000 Cambodians were sent to their deaths, the Pokemon Go players were still going at it.

US-based software developer Niantic on Saturday launched the augmented reality mobile phone application in the Kingdom, which allows players to visit physical locations in a bid to capture Pokemon characters that are visible on their smartphones.

"Some say"?

I wonder what the editorial logic was behind that little addendum.

They already had this problem in the US. Proof that some peoples grip on reality is failing ?

However, everything can not be treated as part of a game - cemeteries and now the Holocaust museum...

Certain other sensitive sites such a memorials and museums have also been caught in the crosshairs as the desire to capture Pikachu knows no bounds, leaving some miffed at the insensitivity of players in certain situations.

The Holocaust Museum in Washington DC is one of those places.

The museum is one of many real world landmarks that is designated as a Pokestop within the game where people can collect free in-game items.

As you might expect, museum administrators aren’t stoked about the huge influx of highly animated, smartphone wielding gamers.

“Playing the game is not appropriate in the museum, which is a memorial to the victims of Nazism,” Andrew Hollinger, the museum’s communications director told the Washington Post.

“We are trying to find out if we can get the museum excluded from the game.”

How are the pokemons generated? Is it random, or are the gamemakers chosing the locations (or perhaps have written an algorith to choose the locations)? Yes, the gamers are an insensitive and careles lot, but it would seeem the gamemakers are really the ones at fault.

The Thai government is going to make it illegal to play Pokemon Go after dark and in certain areas. We'll see how that works out.

Thai Government Set To Decide Where and When You Can Hunt Pokemon
The makers of Pokemon Go, US developer Niantic Inc, are being asked by the Thai government to make certain places off limits to character hunters for ‘reasons of security and safety.’

One of these no-go areas will be Government House and monster hunters will also be banned from other public offices, temples, schools, hospitals and, interestingly, ‘private property,’ whatever that means.

Dangerous areas such as roads, rivers, railways and airports will also be off limits and classified as Red Zones.

Local cellular service providers have already agreed to draw up play zones and will have to publish handbooks for parents to advise their children on the safety restrictions

Takorn Tantasith, secretary-general of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission, said telecom firms also backed a suggestion that Pokemon Go fans should not be allowed to play the augmented reality game at night to avoid untoward incidents.

However, what anybody does with their time during the night, within the law, is not yet the business of any government. Although, as we know, laws can be changed.

‘True Corp, a local licensee of Pokemon Go, will send a written request to Niantic asking for its cooperation,’ Takorn said, before adding that the game developer would also be informed of Thailand’s restricted areas and other places involving national security that are out of bounds for game players.

Chakkrit Urairat, a senior executive of True Corp, said telecom firms cannot restrict areas on Pokemon Go by themselves but will provide guidelines to the public via Facebook, Twitter and Line as well as various customer service centres nationwide...

The "Pokestops" locations are chosen, usually a business location, like a mini-mart/park entrance, or whatever.

I can only assume the actual Pokemon locations are not chosen, as they pop up everywhere. The areas are chosen, but must be an algorithm got them to appear.

The locations were already chosen (for the most part) based on the old game, Ingress, which was made by the same people who made Pokemon Go, which is why they've been able to roll it out globally so quickly.

It's not like you'd have to enter S-21 to catch a Pokemon, UNLESS you already chose to play inside.

If a PokeStop is in S-21, then I blame the game.

Pokemon Go’s Local Launch Met With Fear

BY PHAN SOUMY AND JANELLE RETKA | AUGUST 8, 2016 | អានជាភាសាខ្មែរ

Wandering the first floor of Phnom Penh’s Aeon Mall with her eyes glued to her iPad, Phyu Hnin Pwint followed a GPS-based map as she hunted for Pokemon hiding around the mall to add to her current collection of 40.

Since she downloaded Pokemon Go on Saturday, the 26-year-old Burmese national said she had already played the game for about six hours, taking any chance she had to step away from work at the mall’s Wuttisak cosmetic shop and escape into augmented reality.

Survivors Outraged as Pokemon Go Invades Genocide Museum

BY JANELLE RETKA AND PHAN SOUMY | AUGUST 10, 2016 | អានជាភាសាខ្មែរ

On the grounds of the Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum, the site where an estimated 15,000 people were sent to their deaths by the Khmer Rouge, visitors, employees and survivors of the prison were appalled on Tuesday by the placement of virtual Pokemon Go battlegrounds there over the weekend.

Introduced to Cambodia on Saturday, the GPS-based game draws players—using smartphones or tablets—through neighborhoods and to public attractions to catch and fight animated creatures that appear in on-screen replications of the users’ locations.
