Re: Please help share one or two of your slang or idioms
It's not something you'll hear secular people use in the original context, in Christian circles it's used as a form of shorthand advice, warning about wasting effort, or gentle rebuke (akin to not feeding the troll).MekongMouse wrote:I don't think it still retains any religious connotation, however I agree that the phrase is used more when discussing ideas that are considered above the comprehension of the listener. I've never heard it used to describe behavior or physical objects.

(to go) belly up
American, not sure about other English speaking countries. Means to fail/to die.
Origin: Dead fish float to the surface belly up. Thus for something to go belly up means it has died.

"Dropping the kids off at the pool" - taking a dump

This sounds really reasonable. If the person drowned and died, he or she somehow will have his or her belly up.OrangeDragon wrote:(to go) belly up

I have never heard of this one but another one like jerking off. I guess there are more synonyms for masturbation.MekongMouse wrote:"Choking the chicken" = masturbation.

'Dumping someone' is ending a relationship, but 'taking a dump' means to go to the toilet and produce poo.Samouth wrote:Does it mean ending relationship.kiwiincambodia wrote:"Dropping the kids off at the pool" - taking a dump

Wow," watch your step" samouth. This is "potty humour".You could end up by "putting your foot in your mouth" bigtime.StroppyChops wrote:'Dumping someone' is ending a relationship, but 'taking a dump' means to go to the toilet and produce poo.Samouth wrote:Does it mean ending relationship.kiwiincambodia wrote:"Dropping the kids off at the pool" - taking a dump
If you say to someone "I'm going to see my girlfriend and take a dump" or "my girlfriend is going to take a dump tonight", that could be badly misunderstood.
So, "watch your step" = careful what you say or do.
"potty humour" = low level humour/ toilet humour - a "potty" is where little kids pee and crap when they're too small to get on a (western) toilet
" put your foot in your mouth" or "put your foot in it" = when you say something that will get you into trouble.
You are going to end up with a very strange conversation style if you use too many of these idioms Samouth. The CEO posters have a very twisted sense of humour.
And of course, you know the expression "Shit, or get off the pot" ?

"Turning Japanese" - this one is kind of racist. It is an English idiom meaning to masturbate. The origin is that when you white men masturbate, their faces supposedly look Japanese. It originated in a very catchy song in the 80s about a guy masturbating to a picture of his girlfriend while in prison.
"Taming Strange" - Canadian phrase meaning to have sex, "strange" being Canadian for vagina.
