What is a pig butchering scam?
The pig butchering scam, also known as a romance scam, is a long-term fraud that combines investment schemes, romance scams and cryptocurrency fraud. This scam originated in Southeast Asia, and the name originates from the Chinese phrase "Shāz Hū Pán," meaning pig butchering. A ring of cryptocurrency scammers search dating and social media sites for victims.

The scammer typically creates a fake account and reaches out to potential victims through sites such as Tinder or WhatsApp. The goal is to become this victim's "lover" or "friend" through cordial discussions.

I think men are generally dumber.
We pay them.
They can do nothing, if they want.
They don't like us; generally, we stink, burp & fart openly, hairy, drink, fight, (more than them), messy, and, apart from a few of us, and gays, are unattractive.
Girls are pretty and make themselves look nice for other girls. They just need to dress slutty for men.
Men are good to go out and work and bring home the bacon, lift heavy things, fix the car, mow, security, impregnation, and generally make life cheaper.
They would rather have a dog, girlfriends, money, and a cucumber.

The video is very interesting and relevant to Cambodia. What surprised me is that the pigs were women - and the featured lady had 2.5 million laying around to invest in this scheme.

I have been getting random texts and messages that begin with “Hello Hannah it’s me Meghan.” I then I say, “Wow it’s so great to hear from you again!” - then they say you’re obviously the wrong person sorry to bother you. I persist with no it’s really me.

In earlier iterations these randoms would introduce themselves and ask about investments or say they are interested in investments. I would tell them I’m a bitcoin billionaire because I bought in 2011 for Pennie’s.

Eventually I get bored and tell them they need to fix up their scam as it’s too obvious but if they want to patch me through to a manager I want to ask about how to get a job with you guys because I think I would be good at it.

Lately I have not been getting any more of these texts and messages - heh.

Sour Grapes: stomping on a Cambodia-based “pig butchering” scam

The success of “pig butchering” (sha zhu pan, 杀猪盘) scams has driven the expansion of their hunt for new victims, both by well-established and well-organized scam rings and by smaller and less professional copycats. In the fake gold trading scam I discussed in my last report, for example, initial contact of victims was made through Twitter. Others we’ve seen have used Facebook Messenger for their initial approach, or other social media and messaging apps. And several others I’ve encountered—including the one detailed in this report—have reached out with a lure message over Apple’s iMessage or other digital channels for Short Message Service (SMS) texts.

These texts, which are usually designed to look like accidental mis-texts, are really designed to allow the scammers to spam large numbers of potential victims and then selectively engage those who text back. From there, they attempt to engage in casual conversation, and then suggest that the digital meet-cute is a sign that they are “fated to be friends.” From there, the scam follows a familiar pattern—moving the target to another messaging platform for easier engagement while freeing up the text account to approach additional victims or be shut down while another number is set up.

As I discussed in our previous report, I received a deliberately mis-addressed text message on one of my phones that led me into an engagement with the scam ring (which I have designated as “Sour Grapes” for reasons that will soon become apparent), with a young Malaysian woman acting as the face of the scam and occasionally directly interacting with me.

Calling it “news without verified sources and baseless”, Preah Sihanouk Provincial Administration yesterday issued a statement dismissing a controversial BBC documentary titled ‘Pig Butchering Romance Scam’.

The statement issued yesterday said an investigation carried out by the authorities has found that the documentary has “severely affected the honour and dignity of the Preah Sihanouk Provincial Authority as well as the leadership of Royal Government of Cambodia”.

According to the video posted on YouTube on March 8 by the BBC Eye, an investigative section of BBC World Service, human trafficking victims are locked up, beaten, starved and forced to work for criminal gangs at several illegal gambling places in Preah Sihanouk province.

In the video Preah Sihanouk province is portrayed as a hotbed for human trafficking and forced confinement. The story features the notorious Huang Le, a site owned by a powerful person who is alleged to be close to authorities and government leader
