Phnom Penh Traffic

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

Phnom Penh Traffic

Post by VLayHo-ho-ho »

Even Randall Raines would find it hard to go anywhere in 60 seconds in Phnom Penh on these atrocious roads.

Bad quality, bad traffic. Even worse drivers!

Words of advice for new travellers...
•get a bus or taxi (for aircon purposes).
•have insurance.
•don't walk around alone at night.
•have quick reflexes.
There was no sarcasm or malice intended during the making of this post.

So, basically, what these pearls of wisdom add up to is treat Phnom Penh just like any city in the developed world. It never ceases to amaze me at the number of people who, once away from their homeland, throw caution and common sense to the wind!

Good to see that others are observant in the development of this city.

Lots of people still don't know about Cambodia. It's still one of the lowest in the development stages in comparison to the rest of the ASEAN.

No need for the high and mighty approach.

You were lucky, that's all. Honestly.....I really would suggest NOT to stumble around at 2 or 3 o'clock in the morning...........perhaps it works out 50 times and then suddenly, out of the nowhere and for no reason you get a knife in your stomach. Beware.
Und der Haifisch der hat Tränen
Und die laufen vom Gesicht
Doch der Haifisch lebt im Wasser
So die Tränen sieht man nicht

In der Tiefe ist es einsam
Und so manche Träne fliesst
Und so kommt es dass das Wasser
In den Meeren salzig ist

Francis, my youthful vigor renders me invincible to petty knife attacks. *yawn*

it's dangerous after dark and in particular after midnight because of the widespread drunkness and drug abuse.

driving your moto at 30km/h won't save you from crazy khmers running their SUV at full speed, and if they hit you they will also run away leaving you bleeding on the ground like a sack of potatoes.

said that, so far so far good, but sooner or later we might found ourselves in the wrong place at the wrong time.
using a tuktuk by night is the safest option in my opinion even if you're sober.

I'm guessing the crime rate will soar next month to coincide with the water thingy. There will be a lot of scint country folk looking for food and bus money methinks.

Rush hour seems to last all day! 8:30am-11am, then it's 4pm-8pm with crazier more erratic driving
