Phnom Penh Air Quality

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. Phnom Penh Air Quality

Post by xandreu »

I guess Cambodians have bigger fish to fry than air pollution and air quality, but I do understand why so many people wear masks, especially out on the roads.

I have a pretty bog standard metal framed clothes hanger/dryer which lives on my balcony, and I use every week to hang my washing on to dry.

However, every two weeks, I wash my bedding, which means I have to drape my sheet and duvet cover over the whole hanger. Knowing that it's been outside for a couple of weeks, I know that it will be dirty, and I don't want to drape my nice clean bedding over it, so I give it a quick wipe down with some wet paper towel.

Here is the accumulation of shit that typically builds up on my hanger that I wipe off every two weeks. I live in very quiet suburban area, with very little traffic. I have no idea what it would be like if I lived in a more built up area. But that's the sort of thing that goes into our lungs every time we go outside.

I personally don't wear a mask when I go out, due to laziness, but I am starting to wonder if it's worth the extra second or two slipping one on.

On a yearly basis, Chiang Mai doesn't even make the top 100. And Phnom Penh barely makes the top 1,000.

Phnom Penh Enveloped in Smog Amid Wave of Regional Air Pollution

The AQ isn't very good at the moment, judging by my sinuses. The lack of rain washing the crap away doesn't help.

Living in the mountains in Norway, a 2 hours drive from larger Norvegian cities, I must say that arriving in BKK or PNH really hits me hard every time. The air is not anything like I am used to and it takes me a few days to adjust every time.

I Think a lot depends on what you are used to, i was 6 months in PP and had no more problems then other days/years. Never wear mask but am cautious with aircons.
Before coming i should have done in my country some allergy and astma-tests. But i didnt. I did them 2 weeks ago and tested positive for both, now first time in my life having some medecins for both (and a "puffer", no idea whats the english worth for it), and i am surprised how good i am now, curious how i would feel when back in PP without a mask !! Most people born and raised in PP hardly suffer or speak about air-polution i would say, just because they are used to it. Ofcourse if coming from the norwegian mountains, you feel and sniff the difference !!

Hardly surprising. The air is a lot hotter here for a start.
