Phnom Pehn Current Vibe

This is where our community discusses almost anything! While we're mainly a Cambodia expat discussion forum and talk about expat life here, we debate about almost everything. Even if you're a tourist passing through Southeast Asia and want to connect with expatriates living and working in Cambodia, this is the first section of our site that you should check out. Our members start their own discussions or post links to other blogs and/or news articles they find interesting and want to chat about. So join in the fun and start new topics, or feel free to comment on anything our community members have already started! We also have some Khmer members here as well, but English is the main language used on CEO. You're welcome to have a look around, and if you decide you want to participate, you can become a part our international expat community by signing up for a free account.

I haven't noticed any change in the price of beer.

Me neither but how long can that last?

What I have noticed is a sharp decline of people out and about, many long termers have gone home for a while (after 2 years) and few newcomers seem to be arriving. The flurry of old faces arriving at Christmas has dried up, many have gone back home and the place now seems much quieter than 3-6 months ago.

I must say thanks for someone finally giving me an answer to my original question upon starting the topic.

It only took 10 pages.

What is this 15 cents you are so angry about?

It's 13 years since Randal (RIP) of the GYM bar said to me "The days of $1 draft in Phnom Penh are over"

Yet here we are, Gym bar and Randal both long gone and draft still costs on average $1

I also noticed on arrival and before when booking a place that quite a few hotels were shut. I used to stay at Bolina Palace (a palace it's not!) on 154, a somewhat run down place that fit the bill. Cheap, bed comfortable enough, fairly clean and the wifi and AC usually worked. I decide to book it before I arrived beginning of June on hotels.com. Imagine my surprise after a 16 hour flight to Singapore and then a connection to PP when I showed up to find the place shuttered!

Cocksuckers at hotels.com then fucked up my refund with a "incorrect information" notice or some such BS when I tried to get it online. Rather than try to deal with international calls etc. I will wait until I return to Canada to pursue it.

The gall of this company to keep making reservation for a property they must know is closed is a huge piss take.

Thanks for the report. This is why I've hesitated in visiting Phnom Penh and elsewhere. It confirmed earlier video evidence. Some recent YT videos seem to show the streets, like 130 and 136 busy, but when the camera pans past the restaurants and bars, they're fairly empty. A shot of the Big Easy, which looks like a double shophouse, it was 95% empty at 8 in the evening.

If you go outside of the 300-400 metre stretch around Tree Town on Soi Buakhao in Pattaya, it's like an abandoned town. Video producers passing by Action Street, Soi Boomerang, Soi Lengkee, Soi 6, Soi Pothole (Chaiyaphum) and New Plaza show some open bars but there's almost zero customers, just a lot of girls idling over their phones, and one or two guys walking the street itself. I really don't know how long all these bars, including a lot of new ones on Soi Pothole, can survive.

My recent experience with empty bars and restaurants in Vung Tau caused me to cut my visit in half. It's just not an appealing scene and therefore hardly worth the expense of travelling.

My point is more at the best of times its hard to make a bob here let alone when there are very few tourist.

In my experience (this is just mine) most expats under 55 are barley keeping their heads above water at this time.
