Phnom Pehn's cop shop

Post by clippy »

Teuk Thla is a clearinghouse where soldiers, police and occasionally criminals haggle over all things police- and military-related, from footwear to stun guns, and even insignia of rank.
has anyone ever been to this market? I read that you could buy all kinds of police and army gear in that 'off the rails' book, but I thought that it was back in the crazy 90s when that sort of goings on was rife. Still happening.

good place for some holiday souvenir shopping hey, surprised this isn't on the tuktuk drivers s21, killing field, shoot gun itinary.

Back in the crazy '90s, some foreigners did buy uniforms just for a laugh. But it wasn't widespread. Things have changed considerably since then.
And even though the sellers in the article admit that what they are doing is illegal, I would be very surprised if they would sell to a foreigner these days.

I bought military boots there the other day. From what I could tell, I was the only barang there.

I went there once back in 2009 to try and find boots. It was an interesting place. I don't know if it is the same as it was back then but in 2009 everything was for sale.

I go there semi-regularly. Mostly for zippers/military gear. There's absolutely nothing "crazy/off the rails" about it. It's a market like any other. They make tailored uniforms and sell cheap Cambodian boots along with a few higher end boots (both new and second hand). Hammocks, pins/insignia/bags/holsters/mag pouches/belts are also all available. I bought something there once to make myself a tent/saddle bags. Unless you want to buy something specific, it's not really interesting.

Mm. It was a bit like that, wasn't it?

On the other hand, when I was out there buying boots, there were indeed ridgey-didge army and police uniforms of every description, including all the braid and rank insignia, hats, weapons belts, etc. I have been told by multiple sources that the weapons are still there, just not on display. I was allowed to be interested in boots, and only boots, but was not made welcome.
