Passport "fixer"

Post by Otis »

A bit more than a year ago, my friend got her passport. She drove out to the govt office that handles this about 45 mins by moto from Psar Themi. The place was full of lower class Khmer getting passports to work, presumably on contracts, outside the country.

As she entered the road near the office she was approached by several fixer types and chose one of them. He helped with the forms and other stuff and was supposed to expedite the process. But she had to wait on the long lines anyway. Ultimately, after about 3 weeks I think, he told her her passport was ready. She went to pick it up and after waiting on lines out there got the passport in good order.

But did not like the fixer guy as he often did not return her calls and was something of a snotty jerk.

Now she wants to get her young daughter a passport. Does anyone know if a fixer or agent is needed. If so, where's a good one?

Yes, lower class. Plus an onkna or two who were going to work as maids in Malaysia for a year as an act of Buddhist atonement for having grabbed a a couple thousand hectares of land near Banlung.

Obviously you shouldn't need a fixer, but it's set up in such a bewildering way with queues invariably ending up at the wrong desk etc that it's easier to pay the extra for a fixer. I don't remember having to pay for one when I last paid for a Cambodian passport.

I paid one of the travel agents to sort it for my girlfriend. They took her there and did all the work, she was done before lunch time. The agent called two days later to say the passport was ready for pick up.

I have used Lucky Lucky on Monivong a few times. Good service and low fees and helped with the queues etc.

Cannot seem to multiquote,

The agent was on riverside, nextdoor but one to Cadillac bar.

I cannot remember how much I paid but it was about $300.

I'm curious, what is the amount of plain old non-fixer fee to the Cambodian government to get a passport?
