Yep another bell rings. I've inherited those scripts too. I try to limit them to the one time unintentional use since I'm pretty certain they will have as little effect on my kids as they had on me. I rather suspect that those scripts are generations old sermons from Mt. Dad. Frankly I think they make controlled anger look refreshing.

Bitte_kein_Lexis wrote, "There are actually TONS of scholarships at the moment. Way more than any above average student could hope for in the west. A lot of Khmers I know have gotten scholarships to New-Zealand, Australia, Japan, Singapore, China and so on. Scholarships which would be unobtainable from great students from other western countries (besides the top 1%). So even though the undergraduate degrees from these Khmers are really subpar and the produced vastly inferior work as any graduate from a western university, they get the edge over anyone else because, well, they come from Cambodia."
That piece of news about graduate scholarships eased my mind no end. By the way my wife, a former student of mine from ACE, speaks excellent lightly accented English. She has pursued the education that she was denied im the Khmer Rouge period and that village stupor stultifies.
I have tried the post supper get-together unsuccessfully in the past but this evening as a kind of toast to you, I intend to do it again and read your post to my family. Also, we will be celebrating our son's number 1 ranking in the Tbong Khmom district test. Next step Province. Sometimes I complain too much. The shortcomings I see in him probably bear my genetic stamp.

Re: Parenting in Cambodia
As an update I tried the supper get-together once again and if I were to grade it I'd give it a C-, which is an improvement over past such events. I read only selected posts, the whole was too much for one sitting. My wife was relieved at BKL's info on scholarships, but my daughter was a bit put out at my mentioning her behavior and my son was still basking in his glorious scholastic triumph. Next I would like to address issues that I as a foreign husband sometimes have with my Cambodian wife. Anyone up for it?

Good idea, maybe it will help me figure out why I'm divorced.

Your call, I just considered it part and parcel of family difficulties in culturally mixed marriages.

Are we talking about the three day sulks? "Still not talking to me, honey?" Or the dramatic polarity between lovey-dovey and awe-inspiring rage?
